Ok!, your starter falls apart 6 miles from the marina and you have little water,no food and your in a secluded cove way back in.Everyone passes you by and the ranger might get there in 3 to 4 hours but guess what, its me cruising by who just fixed my problem who happens to notice the same worried face and language from afar!no worries i got you covered.I will put your starter back togeather or tow you in no matter what mother nature calls upon us.

I would just remove my emergency starting rope from under the engine hood, start the motor and drive it back to the boathouse and fix the starter, but that's just me.

I could break out my tools but it's just easier to work on it back at the house.

Among other things already mentioned, I keep an old cell phone and charger stored away in a ziploc. Even though the phone doesn't have service, by law it is required to be able to dial 911 and connect. Handy to have in case you forget your active cell phone, charger, or drop it overboard, etc.

I also keep a few pin (survey) flags onboard. They take up very little space and have come in handy for flagging things on the shoreline, unclogging the pisser, checking fuel level when the fuel gauge is broken, wiring up different things, etc. Oh yeah, also keep a few zip ties handy - they also work for unclogging the pisser and tying up things.

Mine works just fine so I guess not everyone knows that they don't work for crap, and who said I don't have tools in my boat?

The most important tool on the boat is a clear head...;)

Other than that, just a basic tool kit, prop wrench if you keep a spare on the boat, a few cotter pins (just in case you swap the prop).

+1, your ability to clearly think your way through an issue is the best tool available.
