Sorry if its a stupid question. I'm assumming that it shouldn't go into gear whithout pulling on this button with two fingers. But mine does, I used to pull it until I found out I didn't need to.

Ok, it's an older Mercruiser say late 70's controller. Has a pull button in the center pivot of the shifter. Right ???????

The purpose of the pull button is for throttle only. When from the neutral position you pull the button out with one hand and advance the lever forward, you will have throttle only and still be in neutral.

Yep, that's how my 74' is. Button in, the lower unit will engage, button out, and it's throttle only...

Re: whats the purpose of button on throttle?

I think he is referring to the nuetral lock button on the underside of the throttle handle. The notch that it suppose to lock into wears down (as well as the lever that fits into the grove) so it doesn't keep it in neutral. I can feel when mine is in nuetral but it is too worn to actually stop me from putting it in gear without depressing button.

-JustMrWill
