What's this, attached to 55el76e stator wires

I have this 55EL76E motor and a repair manual for a 55EL76. I started to troubleshoot the stator today and found two extra wires attached to the posts. I pulled the electrcal box off and found what appears to be some homemade device behind the box.

This device has 3 wires coming out of it, a yellow, yellow/gray, and what looks like a black wire but might be something else that goes to the bottom of the wiring terminal and attaches to a light purple/green stripe wire that goes into the wiring harness. It is potted in epoxy that looks to have been molded around the components by hand.

If I ohm the wires out they ohm out like the stator wires, 1.6 on tthe lowest setting on my VOM.

The stator ohms out as good and the rectifier also, but I still only get 11.something volts on the battery with the motor running.

I bought a DVA adaptor for my meter but don't have any water to run the motor where I keep the boat.

Can somone help me get to the next step here to try and get this motor charging.

It looks like a set of what we used to call "monkey balls". They were diodes that were used in the shift system of the early 70's mtrs. You mtr shouldn't require them unless you don't have the proper g/c on it.

Thanks for the response. I think this power head came off of an electric shift motor, it has the electric shift throttle bracket and a yellow plug on the powerhead. Were the monkey balls required to let you put the eshift power head on to a manual shift motor? If I can pull them off or disconnect them that would suit me fine. Sorry you lost me, what is g/c? I wonder why the called them monkey balls.

Just to clarify, this is a manual shift motor now. I bought it earlier this summer and as soon as I got it home I started to think it was a transplanted e-shift powerhead. The shift/throttle linkage is bolted on over the old fuel only bracket, it has the yellow plug and now it's got monkey balls too.

Well Google told me they are to keep the e-shift solenoids in neutral as the motor winds down at shutdown or something close to that. I think it's safe to assume they are not necessary on this motor anymore and I will unhook them and continue with my trouble shooting tomorrow. Boobie sir, thank you again for the response.

Could these be causing my no charge issue? Everything else checks out good according to the 55EL76 OMC manual.

I typed a msg for you and it got lost. Now to dam tired to type anymore. G/C means gear case. Throw the monkey balls away, put a volrmeter across the battery and run it full throttle. Should read about 14 volts or so.

OK and thanks one more time. I have a volt meter in the Lowrance unit on my boat so voltage is always displayed. I will toss the MB's and hope for the best. If I still don't have 13+ I will start the DVA measurements.
