I have a 1976 merc 115, my trim pump has gotten a little tricky.. when I press the button all I get is a click, unless I bang on the little nipple ontop of the pump, then it will get going. When it does get going, it goes up fine, but down starts out really sluggish the get progressivly faster.. I've tried taking the pump apart so I could clean the soleniod, but I could get those to screws on the side of the pump off.

any one have any suggestions?

Thanks,
Thomas

that click is your solenoid working properly.
by banging on it (the motor), my guess is that you are making your brushes contact where they werent before. I would try cleaning the comutator and brushes on your electric motor.
if you have a manual that would help greatly.

I have no manual, and can't figure out how to remove the casing on the pump.. there is two large flat head screws, that will not turn, on each side of the cylinder

boaterntexas: I had the same problem with mine. you hit the trim motor and it started working. But eventually died completely. I took my boat to a dealer and they took care of me. It cost me 276.00 all together. but i'm happy. I got my boat again.

Your brushes need replacing probably. Take the pump to a starter repair place and see if they can repair it or you can get a used pump on ebay. Or just buy another pump assembly.

having trim tbl too, read in one of my manuals that there are two types of motors, one of which has the magnets on the housing. it cautions that to hit the motor is to ruin it.

I at work, and books are home. so i cant be more specific.

Re: whats wrong with my trim pump

i have the same motor and a Seloc manual. My boat according to the manual has two trim cylinders which is classified as a "type A" system. According to the manual (if you have the same) you can perform a trim pump motor test as follows:

disconnect the black and blue motor wires from the solenoid terminals

connect a 12v supply between the motor terminal where the black and blue wires were disconnected. motor should run. If it fails to operate, it requires service or replacement.

Re: whats wrong with my trim pump

let me rephrase the above as it is a little confusing...to me atleast.

remove black/blue wires from solenoid. connect black wire to negative on battery. connect blue wire to positive on battery. if motor operates then it is ok and problem is in the wiring or switches. if it does not run then either the pump motor or pump and valve assy is defective.
