What's your best guess...

Thinking about making my own circuit board for a project I'm working on. It must be 1/8" thick or the turrets won't fit right. How many layers of 6oz cloth will cure to an 1/8" thick board? My guess is 3 maybe 4.

A circuit board out of glass cloth? There are times to go nuts with boat stuff and times to just go to radio shack and buy a circuit board. If you don't need it pre-coppered, you could prob go to Lowes and find a piece of plastic which will do the deed nicely.

..or maybe someone knows how many layers it takes.

And then there are times when you're making something by hand the way things used to be made.

Turret boards don't use copper traces (or traces at all). I have a supplier for the blank boards. I just thought making my own would add another element of hand craftsmanship to it.;)

Well I was way off. 6 layers and it still cured shy of 1/8". Trying again...

Thanks. Just to make sure we're on the same page. The board with the components on it is just a sample image I searched up. I will be making one similar to that very soon with the fiberglass board I made.

BTW, I'm building my own tube guitar amplifier. It's 5 watts with a 12AX7 (dual triode) preamp and EL84 (pentode) power amp. Single-ended class A amplifier. A very simple design and a good first electronics project for me.

Parts should start showing up at my doorstep around Tuesday.

Re: What's your best guess...

The best of luck to you.I started out repairing the old tube stuff as that was the current technology as I was studying electronics with CIE.
I still have lots of tube test equipment, scopes etc.
Ebay is the place for tubes these days,I have quite an inventory of odd voltage (TV) tubes that I will never use.:(
Don't fall for the brand name trap such as the Fender price for a 6L6 is $65.00 each the last that I knew,I bought a matched pair for $28.00 on ebay that tested and worked just fine.Their 12ax7 is $25.00 or so......waaaaaay over priced.
I would like to try to make a printed circuit board someday, you can buy the kits and there are places that will design the printed circuit silkscreen for you for free.I bet that there are computer programs for free that will do it for you.
Google "Spice Electronic Software free" and look at the hits,it is a great resource for experimentors.I used it back in the DOS days, what a blast to be able to predict how a circuit would work.
In any case, good luck and if I can help or confuse you let me know.Ron G

I'm using one 12AX7 and one EL84. If you have any new old stock of any tubes in those families (12AT7, 12AY7, 12AU7, 5751) you can sell them for more as they are quite sought after. Both were about $10 each. If you have any new old stock of any tubes in those families you can sell them for more as they are quite sought after. Thanks for the info on the DIY PCB's.

Turret board?!??! What are you building -- a vacuum-tube analog fishfinder? :D :p :)

Never mind... a guitar amp was my second guess...

Have you been trolling AX84? If not, are you familiar with the "Firefly" by Doug Hammond?

I have been to the site before while I was researching. Yes, I've done some reading on the FireFly. Looks like an interesting project. You building amps?

Not me, man! High voltage can RUIN your day!
I've built power supplies. That's probably as far as I'll go, although I have considered building a chip amp. This could be a viable option for me since I use pedals for all my effects, including distortion.

Best of luck on your project! :D
