Hi everyone,
First boat I've owned. I live in New York and I know most people are starting to winterize there boats. How long can I continue to use my boat without doing damage. Like running it in cold water. Or maybe you can't do damage. Just trying to figure out when it's time to finally winterize. Had a decent day today so I took it for a spin. Thanks

You can actually leave it in the water all winter if set-up properly. But in general, when the temps get to freezing temps, you want your boat to be already winterized. We use to boat year round in Connecticut. If the outboard was in the water, we didn't have an issue.

Just keep an eye on the weather forecast, if freezing weather is coming then had better winterize the boat if it's an inboard.

Don't let the engine freeze up. Keep the drains open when your not using it.

It depends. It ended for me down here in NC a few weeks ago because I won't have a free weekend until Thanksgiving so I decided to put her up for the season. I think the key thing is to not have to run out there after work last moment because it is going to get below freezing .

me, too. after that I just take it for a short spin every 2 weeks to keep the juices flowing and the bottom clean.

"The season" to me is "which season"? cool weather boating is different than summer boating but still can be fun.

Pfff... You poor Canadians. We call ourselves northerners here in Minnesota, but I can see you earn that title better. Its supposed to get down to freezing overnight here for the first time this fall on Thursday.

That is minus 10 in canadian terms... Which is 14F. Cold, but it has gotten down to low 20's here already. Besides, end of boat season just means the start of snowmobile season is right around the corner!

Season ends when the water gets hard. Open water, open season.

Minnesota is considered "banana belt" weather by our standards. With 8-10 months of winter and -45 temps it can be brutal.
When the wind is blowing its usually unbearable for more than a few minutes. Ice wasn't off the lakes until late May this year.

Yes, its is true, only the strong survive in Minnesota.

Yes, I did consult the oh so powful Google to decipher the poor Canadian's temperature report.

Eastern Wisconsin, springtime = cooler by the lake, late fall = warmer by the lake, depending on which way the wind is blowin and whether you are standing on the shore!

The most meaningful answer may be... "check with your insurance company". In colder climates many policies have a cutoff date (often times around mid October).
