Don't know about the East coast but at least here in Wisconsin many of us are on the rivers fishing until they ice over. Sometimes that isn't until early Dec.

Little different on my portion of the east coast. Migratory fish....you can fish to you hearts content all winter....just don't plan on catching anything.

That said, Striper and Bluefin tuna fishing can be awesome if the weather (i.e winds)cooperate.

Re: When does the season end?

So I guess it depends how much cold I can take..lol.thanks

As long as the water is still liquid, the boat will not care.

You did not state what kind of boat you have, but stated it needed winterizing, so we will assume it is an I/O on a trailer and you want to run it as long as possible and then winterize it once for storage until spring.

I use the local leaves as my indicator. The leaves fall the last week of October and return the first week of May in northern Ohio.
This also coincide roughly with the Average First and Last freezing nights.

New York has roughly the same weather as Ohio; So the time to winterize is just about now. :blue:
See you again in May. :joyous:

It also depends where in NY you are. I am in Syracuse and I am out of the water, working on the cover, changing lower unit oil, fogging the engine, etc. Northern NY, I imagine most are already out and done...Downstate, you have a longer window.

Depends what kind of engine your boat has, if it's an I/O then freezing temps can mean frozen engine bock, and that's bad. But a light bulb in the dog house can extend the season, you're kind of playing with fire IMO. With outboards, the season really never ends, because they self drain, and can be used anytime the urge comes. I have no idea why anyone would care to boat in freezing temps but it is possible. Don't forget to treat your gas in the boat, if it's gonna sit for a few months I would add some ethanol stabilizer or you might be looking at some carb or fuel injector cleaning in the spring!!

Jan 1. for me only becouse striper season closes on that date.

I plan to go as long as I can for the very same reason.

Probably will winterize when it gets below 50. But so far its still nice and 65+.

Striper fishing does not start to get good until the water temps are in the low to mid 40's. 50 degree days are long gone by that time. You know it's cold when you have ice forming in the rod guides in saltwater :)

The season for boating ends when a snowmobile or ice skates are required to move across a body of water.

He's got a jet.

Check your owners manual as to whether its a closed or open loop, and what to do to winterize. If winterization is required, you will want to do it as soon as you get freezing temperatures.

On my ski I disconnect the in and out cooling tubes from the transom, tie them up high and together and pour in about a half gallon antifreeze in.

Every year there are a few Christmas Parades on the ICW. Boats of all sizes are decorated and travel the ICW lit up at night. You have to see the time (and money) some put into lights. The creativity is unbelievable!
