Just whining again, ignore this post if you're sick of me.

I've been looking for an OB powered deckboat for 9 months. I gave up and just last week bought a 21' SeaSwirl DC. I like the boat fine, got a great deal, but can only use it fully at non-low tide.

Today this shows up on local Craigslist:

1999 21 ft. Pro Sport Deck Boat with 2000 Mercury 125 hp Saltwater engine.
Good Condition Great all around boat

I haven't yet signed the title on the SeaSwirl or registered it, and it is still registered to the previous owner for this year, so if I don't register the SeaSwirl yet, I save a few hundred bucks tax. I'm thinking I just may nab the deckboat, let the kids use the SeaSwirl, keep searching for a Whaler for the kids, and when I find one, sell the SeaSwirl. (Possibly first swapping the SeaSwirl's 175HP Johnson with the deckboat's 125HP Merc)

Am I nuts? Any thoughts on how to convince the wife that this is a good idea (even if it's not)

man, if its what you really want and you can afford it, I'd jump on it. I would think you would find yourself regretting not doing it everytime you look at the first boat you "settled" for if you don't...lol. I hate it when that happens to me anyways with buying stuff.

Tell the wife the kids will be more entheusiastic about family fun boating time this way because they have their own boat to use for a little while haha.

You might have some problems selling the Seaswirl if it is never put in your name.

Agree, It's one of those things that would raise a red flag with me. I wouldn't buy it without a clean title in the seller's name.

I've already got a minor registration problem with the boat I just bought from a dealer/broker. The boat was registered in NJ at the time I bought it. The dealer assigned a new NY registration number, put the lettering on the bow, and gave me a temporary registration. He called me 2 weeks ago to tell me that when he submitted the paperwork and HIN to the state, they discovered that the boat had been previously registered in NY before it was registered in NJ. Net-net, my registration number is going to change. So...

- I have a temporary reg with an invalid number
- My boat has an invalid number on the bow
- When the new reg comes I'll need to change the numbers on the boat
- I'll need to contact my insurance to change the policy
- In the meantime I can't get a town launch/docking permit for the season until the new reg comes, as I don't want to do anything to compound the issue.

This was a simple. honest mistake from a reputable dealer. I wouldn't look at a private seller's boat that had any questionable paperwork.

Wow...nice! I'm always available if you're looking to adopt?! :D

If you know what to look for that title issue shouldnt be a problem. Try and sell it, tell the buyer whats up and if he has any problems go the dmv with him to register it. Alot of guys out of work in my area have turned to buying cars fixing them then selling them to help make ends meet. Its commont nott o transfer the title, one not to pay taxes, two so they are not required to get a dealers license after a certain amount of title transfers.

Legally, you do not own the seaswirl. have an accident, you are in a big mess. also if the seller hears about it. he could just legally tow the boat out of your drive way. How can you have insurance on it. if it is not titled to you.

Jd my other half has learned to deal with my BAS . I have picked up 4 boats this season already . I will admit I have $1700.00 into all 4 but wait theres more :D. I picked up a 74 Larson open bow for $450.00 next was a 64 Crestliner for $100.00 then a 69 Cutter for $350.00 and finally a 70 Starcraft jupiter for $800.00 . Now in the meantime the guy I got the Crestliner from I sold a used ( FREE to me ) AC unit for $400.00 so now I am down to $1300.00 invested . Then I sold an 89 Dodge truck that was given to me ( FREE ) for $600.00 which I rolled into boat money so now I am down to $700.00 in 4 boats . I have the Crestliner sold for $250.00 whiiiich brings me down to $450.00 in 3 boats :D. I have the larson up for sale right now and if I get $450.00 out of it that will mean I will have a 1970 Starcraft and a 1960 Cutter ( pretty rare boat ) with $0.00 invested into them both have Mercs hanging off of them and both will be pretty easy ( cheap ) reto's :D.

Yeah, I snapped outta it.

I'm going to skip that deckboat and just use the SeaSwirl DC this year. This will give me time to discover exactly what I want, and I can resume the search for the 'perfect deckboat' in the fall.

The SeaSwirl's getting registered today, insured tomorrow.
