I'm curious about something....
How does one know when to replace a water pump housing??? I know if it is pitted you'd have to. Are there other reasons that aren't obvious? I have a couple of 50's outboards that run too hot although they seem to be pumping lots of water and I've checked the water passages and they're clear. Is it due to the fact that the water temps. in Louisiana this time of year are like 80 degrees??? These same motors ran perfectly cool during winter. If I could sneak in another question---If an impeller looks good and feels good, can it still be weak? Could it be Sierra impellers??? I changed one the other day for a fellow who brought me a BRP impeller for a '58 sportwin and it was so much better built than the sierras that I'm used to, I went and bought myself one for a '63 fastwin I bought the other day for 50 bucks. It did pump very well.
Thanks,
JBJ

I have found a lot of the Sierra stuff to be what I feel is poor quality and not a bargain as far as price.

I just keep am eye on the water flow, but I'm talking about a tiller operated fishing motor. I also installed a tell-tale overboard stream so I can just see it at a glance. I just check the pump in the spring, and go from there. The older aluminum housed pumps wore out much quicker then the present stainless lined pumps'. If I ever get around to it, I have thought about machining an adapter plate to use the stainless pump on our 50's era 18's

Just my opinion, but if you have a good flow of water it isn't going to overheat. Remember those 50s motors don't have thermostats. I just ran the heck out of my 58 Evinrude Fastwin this afternoon and the water felt hot but I could hold my hand on top of the head and it wasn't bad. I have five 50s outboards and haven't burned one up yet.

Thanks for the info, guys!

Hey R. Johnson......How do you know when the aluminum housings are worn out? Do you mic it or something??? I've got a little '56 10hp johnson that runs great and pumps a heck of a lot of water but gets hot enough water will sizzle in the spark plug area and feel darned hot on the head. I can't really figure it out. I have several 50's outboards that I feel are borderline on getting too hot.
Thanks,
