when were outboards hp measured at the prop

title says it all.
when did outboards stop being measured at the powerhead and at the prop for horsepower. and i know force was always measured at the powerhead

Around 85 and I doubt you could tell the difference without a gps.

During the early 1980s, Chrysler changed from powerhead to propshaft rating and down-rated their venerable 105 to 90. So: It is logical to assume that when Chrysler sold out to AMF Brunswick and the engine brand was changed to FORCE, the propshaft method of rating horsepower was retained.

I have to laugh about this a bit....... Mercury was the biggest offender of them all. Many years ago a 100 inline merc would beat the old 100 johnny/rudes "rumor" has it that mercury was doing that prop shaft rating quite a bit in the old days BUT it was not consistent.

i.e. the 140 inline 6 was actually a rebadged 150.......

It all boils down to the real old saying........
