I bought mine on the trailor. But it was missing a few things (No seats, gas tank, steering controls, battery, no motor and the transom was rotting) so I kinda figured it had some issues. But on the bright side it will keep me out of trouble for a long time.

Well against all of the advice I give, I did not water test it. The Chap had only break in hours on it and I trusted the 100%, nearly new, perfect condition boat was indeed perfect. Other factors included the fact the owner who ordered it/the guy I was buying it from was the President of U.S. Bank (yes the actual president of one of the largest banks) had no issues having it maintained and I called the Chap dealer and confirmed the winterizations and service history of its short life. There were timing considerations as well that had some effect on my thought process and additionally in those days, the economy was humming plus Chaps rarely hit the market. There are lots of things that will make you break your rules.

I happened to have a good friend with a roomate that his Dad owned a marina. THey happened to have a boat on consignment that we wanted, so we agreed to a price and bought it. They subsequently checked it out for us and found a bad bearing in the outdrive and a dead CD player. Both of which they replaced free of charge, and while they were in there they put new bellows in, changed all the fluids, and did the yearly service. 10 months and over 100 hours later and not an issue. It pays to know people in the industry.

I would have but I didn't feel like paddling. No engine included.

Yes. Test drive on first viewing.
Mechanic inspection the next day.

Purchased it within 24 hours.

Have only owned it for 24 hours so I'll let you know how that goes. ;)

I support the sea test when ever possible, but in the same breath, have purchased several w/o them. $10k boat would be a must, $4K buy, and I didnt, but had been on it before and know the owner well. They all reqire a different approach depending on "what" you are buying. My 61 lone star with twin 35's was a no test boat, but I planned on tearing it apart anyways, and we knew it didnt run. That one was 280 miles away so I negoiated the price before jumping in the truck, paid $500 and drove her home, where it sits today, making small progress toward a splash. I have sea tested 3 of perhaps 8 boats, 2 of which I had been on and knew well.

I bought 2 boats from different deals in different parts of the state. Both MADE me take it on the water. They would not let me sign the papers. One the brand new, which I ordered, the other was used.

Re: When you bought your boat did you take a test drive before you finalized the deal

The shop who brokered the deal was a sorry bunch. The first time I took it out there was at least 5 gallons of water in the tank - they said they drained it. Their so called mechanic was nothing but a yard ape. When my oil alarm went off on the first three trips he ( ape ) claimed there was rocks in the thermostats. It turned out to be air in the lines - it seems the ape couldn't help playing with the emergency oil pump switch. Each time they gave my boat back I got a 2k bill give or take and the same problem. I refused to pay the last bill and washed my hands with them after many years of using them. ( Maryland Offshore Performance ) I took it to Point Lookout Marina where they rebuilt the carb, and got me running good for $1,800.00. Then I tore it all apart - not the motors.
No I did not because MOP renigged on taking it out after they were payed!

mine WAS out when i got it. 1979 Grady White 18'6 surface sunk at a dock for a month. Owner posted on craigslist if anyone could get it away from the dock, they could have it. well, i got it away from the dock and into my yard. after giving up on the 115hp Evinrude she had i threw a '79 johnson 115hp on her (got it for $600) and slapped her on a trailer ($250). now im busy trying to get the oyster rake off her hull (looks like it was in the water w/o bottom paint for 2 years). all in all, fun little investment. just hope i get a few seasons out of her.

Ran on the ear muffs and everything went good. I then took it out a few days later and it started to get hot at idle and cool down while moving across lake. Turned out the water pump impeller was bad as the boat had sat for a year before i purchased it.

Re: When you bought your boat did you take a test drive before you finalized the deal

We drove a couple of hours to check out a boat and asked for a test drive. Ten minutes into the test ride, the engine over heat alarm goes off. The owner shut the boat down and we started looking for obvious problems. Ended up taking off a couple of the water hoses and shook out several bits of impeller. He had replaced a broken impeller, but didn't track down the broken vanes. The boat had a couple of other issues and we talked him down quite a bit. Ended up buying the boat and after some work, it runs great. We're actually good friends with the prior owners now. Funny how things work.
If your looking for a turn key boat, a test drive is a must. And bring someone who has boating experience if you don't. They can listen, look and feel for problems.

Ok....I am feeling very stupid here. I bought a 1998 700 XS on sight....looks good, did muff the motor and started right up and pumps water good. But I did not test drive it because ...well someone right behind me was going to get it and so I said sold. I know...I know but it was $4,000 and it really looks nice and everything functions. I do read horror stories about a NITRO defect in the transom which worries me...but motor only had 80 hours on it and is spotless inside cover.

Did I screw up bad?

First I can't comment on that particular boat. Did you screw up? Who knows and no one here can say. because the word "boat" has no meaning, the question has no answer. As the comments prove, it's all driven by circumstances. The only "never" is "Never listen to advice here that includes 'never' or 'always' except as to one thing."

It's really a simple risk/cost analysis. For example, when i bought mine without a sea trial, but with reliable basic info about the motor, I figured that at the price, worse case = replace the outboard, I'd still come out OK, so I took the chance.
Does that have anything to do with me putting a new lower unit on 2 years later? No. Boats in perfect used condition--even new ones--will have problems eventually. It's part of the deal (and cars are different that way).

There are two reasons to sea-trial a boat. The first is to see if the hull and other designs suit your needs--specifically your conditions, and including the amount of power it has. In that regard, sea trials often don't answer the question. it's a real problem if you buy new and find the boat won't work for you, but it has no problems of its own. therefore it's better to sea-trial other people's boats and then go buy one like it--that's exactly what I did, and another reason not to need a sea trial for the purchase.

The second reason is to test condition. I'm an OB guy and know that how they run on the water is not the same as on muffs. So you really do have to run them. But if you can't, and the compression is good, you are probably only risking something that can be repaired. So with a basic <20' outboard, few other issues, except what you can see on land, will show up at sea. A leaking aluminum boat is one; overheating is another. (There may be different factors with i/o) You just have to ask, what is the risk and what is the cost?

Re: When you bought your boat did you take a test drive before you finalized the deal

I took the boat to a great place near my home to get it all checked out. The transom was solid and they are going to give if a work over. Going to replace the impeller just because it's cheap and service the lower unit just to be safe. Yes, the $4,000 is a risk I can afford to take. They are a authorized repair location and they were so nice. Should have it ready to hit the lake on Friday.

Absolutely! Can't imagine purchasing without a test drive, especially with a used boat, and with those new to boating. I could sort or understand if I had years of boating experience and was familiar with the make and model, but still seems like an unneccessary risk.

Yep, wouldn't consider buying without a test drive. Too many horror stories about what happens when you don't.

Only time i would buy a used anything without a test drive would be if the price ($5k boat for 100$) was so good it didn't need to even GO....and from someone i at least knew sorta.

but --- i didn't test drive my boat. just a lot of sitting in different boats and going "Vrrrooom" - HA

Re: When you bought your boat did you take a test drive before you finalized the deal

I water tested my new (to me) boat. Checked oil etc and all seemed well. Two weeks later and I had had water in the oil. A cracked block was the culprit. 3 hairline cracks and it took a few runs before the symptoms showed up. When the engine was tore apart the cracked were invisible to the naked eye. Just goes to show that a water test will not find everything. However, I wouldn't buy a boat without testing on the water first. 3 months later and many ???? worse off and i'm back on the water. A painful lesson learned.
