I have a 1989 Evinrude 48 SPL. There are many different number everywhere on it and I am a first time owner, great forum by the way. Anyways where can I locate the serial number (the one that people are always asking you for)? And in what format will the number be (how many letter and numbers)?:confused:

Actually, I think you want the model #. Not sure on your model but help is on the way. Check on the starboard side of the mounting bracket.

E48SPE*CE or something like that.

E=Evinrude
48=horsepower
SP=Design features
The last 2 letters=year

The model number tag is located on the top outside edge of the CLAMP BRACKET; or, on top of the SWIVEL BRACKET HOUSING (port or starboard). It's usually a metal tag or a sticker.

If your horsepower and year are correct, your model number should be E48ESLCE ... or something very close to that.

the inside of the motor casing has been painted before, there is a sticker in there that has been painted over and maybe that was it but you cant read it anymore. All the other numbers everywhere are just six digit numbers.

Look for silver plug on the power head ... something like this:

It should give you the model number.
