Where does someone install stern eyes?

I wish to install stern eyes on my old runabout so I can hook up an inflatable towable. Where on the transom do I bolt the eye to? Can I remove the handles that are there and put through bolts in? Does adding the eyes make the transom less strong?

Sask, If the existing handles are throughbolted and strong, why not just use them? If not, buy some marine SS eyebolts, and drill holes for them in a place where they will not interfere with the handles. If the transom is strong, just standard SS washers and locknots can secure the eyebolts. Put some silicone caulk on them before installation. If you doubt the strength of the transom, install some aluminum or SS backing plates to make the installation stronger.

First determine the integrity of the transom. If it is solid with no flex, then adding the eyes will not cause any problems. If the transom is soft and flexes under load then you may want to reconsider and fix the transom first. The higher the eyes are mounted, the less likely the tow rope will drag in the water when pulling the inflatable. You need to thru bolt the transom eyes and use either a backing plate or large fender washers to distribute the load. Wherever you decide to place them, check for any possible interferences. <br />Don't use silicone for sealing anything that penetrates the hull. Use either 3M 5200, 4200 or 4000 series sealants.

I suggest avoiding anything described as "chrome plated zinc alloy" or "Zamak" because the package says it will not hold up in salt water. This stainless steel type will last much longer and you will be much happier with it in the long run: <br />

I know it's listed as a bow eye, but it works on the transom too.<br /><br />The higher you can mount them and the farther out to the corners, the better they will perform. And don't forget to buy a good quality tow rope in a bright color that FLOATS. Rope that sinks.... stinks.<br /><br />Also, a pair of Snap Clips like these make it easy to connect and disconnect stuff to the eye (stainless wouldn't hurt here either):<br /><br />

Those sealers can be found at your local marina. One of them, I think it's the 4200 can be purchased at Wal Mart.

The 3M products are intended specifically for above AND below waterline applications. They are polyurethane products, not silicone based. Much superior bonding strength, and flexibility. The 5200 is considered permanent, 4200 is removeable and 4000 is removeable and has high UV resistance. Usually found at most marine suppliers and dealers.

Well that answers all my question on this topic...thanks a million everyone who helped me out.
