Ok I am totally confused, bemused, and bewildered.

I have been working on a recently acquired DT 25 poking and prodding a threaded hole at the rear of the lower cowl in an attempt to get water to pump through, with no success

Must admit I haven't had a lot of time and no workshop manual, and any posts I found in searches said "Yes, there is a problem if your engine doesn't pee"

Ah, but, here's the thing; I can run this engine for 30 minutes in the tank and still touch all the powerhead without heading for ER?
She's pumping water out through two holes just below the transom bracket and out through the above water exhaust; all sources run lukewarm.

Today I decided to take my time and in a brightly lit workshop discovered that there is a hole in the starboard side lower cowl where I suspect the telltale was supposed to be. It still has factory blue paint intact on it so looks like it was never used. There is nowhere on the powerhead for a "take-off" to flow water out to this hole.

Is it possible that I have an engine that never had a tell-tale???

Or has a previous owner/mechanic "blogged" the system for some bizarre reason???

Any answers very gratefully received as it's driving me nuts and I am scared to use this engine at sea until I am sure I'm not going to have row home!
