I have a 1977 mercury 85hp and need some really small fuel line, it measures close to 1mm inner diameter. Where do i find fuel line this small? The fuel line runs behind the switch box pictured. It runs from the fitting to the top left of switch box down to another fitting lower than the switch box.

Thanks and yes it does seem like it's an oil line, smells like oil not gas.

boats.net may have the specific part from mercury, if not they may still show it on the website to order, and if they do not have it in stock they will get it from mercury for you - or if that part has been replaced with another part # since the time your engine was built - they will figure out the crossover to what mercury would recommend.

I bought all new fuel lines from there this year for my engine; great experience.

use the yellow fuel resistant vinyl tubing used on weed eaters, they should have it at the auto stores

Re: where to get fuel line

Lawn mower fuel line is called tygon.

Tygon will work, but it's not to marine code. It is a fuel line. It's called a bleed line, and it drains pooled fuel from behind the reed valves and feeds it to the opposing cylinder. Symptoms of failure are mostly poor idle.

The bleed line is listed in the parts list for your engine as a Mercury part number. Yer local marine dealer/mechanic probably has it in bulk. In a pinch you can use Johnson or Evinrude hose on a Mercury.

hope it helps

Re: where to get fuel line

There has to be a marine shop around there somewhere. Tygon will work in a pinch, but it only lasts a few years.

I put tygon fuel lines on mine about 3 years ago. Checked during this spring tune-up, I find it's getting hard and needs to be replaced. I'm going for the genuine marine stuff this time.

A Merc dealer will likely have what you want. If no Merc dealer nearby, use a 1/4 drive socket to remove the brass fitting from the block. Measure the length you need (likely 2 foot or so), and take the fitting to an autoparts store and buy some neopreme vacuum tubing of the correct diameter and length. The bottom fitting is a one way (out), so test it and clean it up if necessary.

Re: where to get fuel line

I did find some at the marina but the hole is about half the size of mine, the next size is bigger so i got 2 feet of the smaller i.d. Maybe a little heat will soften it up enough to slide it over the fitting. Chris, i did see the little ball and figured it was a one way fitting. Thanks for the replies.
