Where to get GOOD used parts

Merc mechanic said I need new stator and two switch boxes (one is bad but he said to replace them in pairs). His total estimate for parts and labor is Approx $900.

Does anyone know where I can get good used parts? I know a used part is questionable but I cant fork out $900 right now. Maybe someone has the parts I need and are willing to sell... The stripers are about to run and I need to fix my boat. Any help is appreciated.

79 Mercury 115hp (no distributor) inline 6

BTW- problem was the boat idled fine but could not get past 1300 rpm. Felt like it was flooding out.

Alot of dealers will offer used parts..the one i work at has a pretty good selection...i dont know if we have what you are needing though. As far as changing both boxes...that is mercs reccomendation but it is really not common practice in the normal fishing world. dont fix what aint broke. They say to change both due to a bias circuit connecting the 2 but it is rarely a problem.

Bradley is right on the money..you do not have to change both packs.

It is also rare to have to replace the stator and switchbox in one go.

TMD

The only time I've had to replace both a switch box and a stator, was when the charging side of the stator had the wires broken off flush with the casing, and the switch box happened to be bad as well..

Scott..

Thanks for the advice. If I remember correctly the mechanic told me the switch box that controls high rpms is not putting out enough volts or the volts arent normal. The other box has good readings thats why its idling o.k. I dont recall why he said he had to change out the stator...

Your Tech is misleading you. The Stator supplies current for high and low speed. IF you do not have the highspeed side..you will only have idle or just above idle. This is not due to the powerpacks.

TMD

So are you saying I may only have a bad stator? I should get my boat back and run the electrical tests outlined in my repair manual.

You're right Marine Doctor, the stator is the only part the mechanic found bad. He said because someone in the past replaced a switch box with a non-mercury part number, that I should replace them both to reduce the chance of frying another stator.
