Re: Where to retire.

As you can see, I live in Orlando, Florida. It's hard to be more than 15 - 20 minutes from a fresh water lake. Takes me 10 minutes from drive way to casting. I have 5 lakes within 30 minutes of home, the east coast (Cocoa Beach) 40 - 50 minutes, and the west coast (Gulf) is about 90 minutes. I'll be fishing around 6:45/7:15 AM tomorrow. And I won't have to chip ice to launch the bass boat. By 10:00 AM the jacket and long sleeve t-shirt will be off and the legs unzipped from the combo pants/shorts (I'm not trying to rub this in to the folks up north). There are many nice towns near the Gulf and ocean that a person can select to live not their retirement. And we don't expect the state to one-day fall into the ocean (earth quakes). I'm really jealous cause I could fish and boat everyday but I'm still 9 to 11 years away from retirement.

Jim,
We may have a quake or two every ten years here in CA, but we don't get our roofs blown off every year. :p

What's the average (or median) price of say a 3 bedroom family home on the gulf side of FL?

Joe, are you looking to be "on the water" say a water canal or beachside. Big difference in price. In Galveston you can have either but its cheaper to live on canal. We love it. From our boat slip under the house, we can access the bay, the Gulf of Mexico and its only 3 miles to the ICW.

I have friends in RE down here if you need more info on local property for sale and/or foreclosures.

Our property value has doubled in the last 10 years.

Brian FD
Yep, your starting to get in to it SPORT. ;)

I think you may find the Whale Rider was a New Zealand (NZ) Movie. NZ is about 2,500 Klicks south of Australia. If you go much further Sth of NZ you start coming back up the other side !!!!!!!!!

I was born/bred in NZ but left 15yrs back for Aussie.

Australia is a pretty big place, with very few people. In the north it is fully tropical, in the South temperate. Most people live on the Eastern Seaboard, a few on the SE and a few on the W. It only has 20m people, and although we have our share of mongrels, the majority are pretty decent, with a very distinct sence of humour.

There are a lot of good Aussie Movies, and a good start is The Dish. It deals with one of your manned space flights years back and how these clowns felt about the Yank NASSA bloke, and how they all but stuffed up the whole flight, and how they bull****ted NASSA that nothing was wrong!!! NASSA still probably dosn't know what happened.

The country people are the one's with the most distinct character, attitude, dress and language.
The city people are just the same as all city people.

Let us know if you want any sites/info etc.
Cheers
Phillip

Re: Where to retire.

Ladyfish,
I'm a good five years away from getting serious about any such move. I still have kids in school. Property values here have doubled in the past four years. But, unless we move out of CA, our equity does us no good. We would need to pour all of it back into another house. I'd love to own a place with canal access to the Gulf. I'd even be content with living within 15 minutes of the Gulf. In CA, a house within 15 minutes of a coastal harbor will cost at lease $850K, and that's for a small place.
Right now I guess I'm kinda looking for a place to visit. Galvaston or Florida both sound nice to me.

Re: Where to retire.

Joe, you should plan a trip with the family. We moved to Galveston when our daughter was 15 and put her into private school.

I know it would be easier to vacation with the family during spring break, but I would not recommend it either here or Florida during that time. At least not the month of March or first week in April. In May the weather and fishing is great here.

We would be happy to familiarize you with the area. If you want to rent a Beach House look up Sand 'N Sea, ask for Anne and tell her Connie sent ya. :)

Re: Where to retire.

I live in Ca. the price of my house has skyrocketed because of the acrage, and its a horse community, with a bridle path running throughout. When I retire I will sell this house and wait for Homers neighbor to put his house up for sale so I can bug the crap out of him :D but I'm not a liberal

Re: Where to retire.

Joe, Kiplingers did a survey on the best places to retire, taking into consideration, taxes(property, sales, & income)& prices of real estate

1. was Delaware, no sales tax, low prop taxes, high income tresholds before retirement gets taxed. and certain pensions where tax exempt.

I forget what #2 was but it was a state down south. if I can find the article I wll post it.

Brian FD
Thank you for the reply.
Been away for a few days so hope this thread isn't dead.
BTW means "confusion" to me.
Does it stand for something like Between You and Me
As for eating at the "Outback"....is that some type of Aussie style restaurant ?
We have an area known as the Outback so I guess they are the same. You want to see the Outback, it is down right amazing.
What does LOL mean.
There are a lot of other "things" that appear in peoples texts that confuse me too. Don't let it worry me tho.
Cheers
Phillip

And, YES, I do want to visit the 'real' Outback.
LOL = lots of laughs

Here's a site to give you some, if not most, Internet acronyms and abbreviations:
Internet Acronyms

G'day!
