I have an 2004 4.3L V-6, Mercruiser I/O, at 190 Hp. I changed the oil at 30 Hours, and for pre wintereization, but can not locate the oil filter... I have been to every square inch of the motor, and can not find it..? I found the fuel filter on the front starbord side of motor..(looks like an oil filter, but it says fuel filter on it) Any help? Is it possible they don't use oil filters on these?

I have owners manual and service manual. no pictures of oil filter...just one mention of changeing it.. no information as to what part number it is, or its capacity or its location...
Your picture is not the same model I have. the 2004 4.3L v6 has a remote power steering and tilt pump and reservoir... located at the starbord transom right against it... no indication on the engine oil filter.

So, what's the serial number of the engine? Is it an MPI, Carbed, does it have the dry joint exhaust??????

I believe the Carb'ed V6's don't have the remote oil filter like what is on Don's picture. Yours will be on the block.

It seems like it would be on the port side somewhere since the remote filter is on the port side -- gotta be there somewhere.

Re: Where's my oil filter

Probably the easiest thing to do would be to reach down and feel or look at where the oil filter would be on the block, if it didn't have a remote. If there is no filter there, follow the hoses to the filter. It can't be that hard to find an oil filter.

My advice is to look for the place thats the hardest to reach and out of sight its sure to be there. Mines on the starboard side of the engine at the back.

john

On the 2003 4.3 car block it is on port rear back by the bell housing and pointing straight down which makes it very easy to get to in my truck but probably very hard on a tight boat

it makes it easy to see why they made a remote filter option

tommays

Don, Now youve got me worried, its on the right hand side of the engine when looking from the front of the Boat. If its not heaven only knows what Ive replaced with a oil filter ;)

I have the same motor.
As you are looking at the motor from the front, It is on the right side bottom of the motor all the way in back by the flywheel. Good luck.

Re: Where's my oil filter

Hey guys, I was just funnin with Chris.
Geez.

The filter is on the PORT side of the engine if it's a standard old 4.3L engine and it got an outdrive behind it.
The reason for the words port and starboard were to prevent confusion on the old ships.
Perhaps since this is a forum regarding boats we could use a few simple terms to keep things a little less confusing.

And if people are looking backwards,(toward the back of the boat) the starboard side of the boat is still on the starboard side.

Re: Where's my oil filter

Thanks all. I will be searching again this week, and let you know...

FYI I followed all the lines that run to the drain hose under the block, below the oil pan.. noe of them lead to the oil filter... I have had my flashlight and my hand on every square inch and feel nothing even close...

I will let you know... and for the record, Port is left... non-steering wheel side.. The wine is gone, all that is left is Port.
