Re: Which Chartplotter do you own?

I use a Garmin GPSMAP168 Sounder chart plotter.
I am on the St. Lawrence River and I find that the base map is off, it shows me to be about 1/4 mile further south than I am. As an example if I'm on one of the islands in Canadian water it will show me as south of the US/CAN border. I've had numerous e-mail communication with Garmin and they can't seem to give me an answer. I've updated the software this winter so I'll see how it is this spring.
The Garmin support tech has asked me to take a picture of the screen showing the lats/longs and the base map showing where I am....but he said that probably won't give him any indication as to why, but he can show it to all the other techs and maybe someone will have seen it before...

Sorry about rambling but it pi$$e$ me off !!!!!

Our two GPS receivers do not have plotting capability, just a pointer to the waypoint. We use them with paper charts and of course a proper compass.

Nothing to be pizzed off about. You have an old unit with a basemap (very rough/crude map). From what I've seen you are doing pretty good to be within 1/4 mile of your plotted location.

If you want your position to be precise in relation to your map you need to get the detailed mapping. Unfortunately that unit is pretty old and only holds 2.5 mb of mapping. I'm not sure that the mapping programs that are compatible with that unit are available anymore.

lowrance 335C DF but have not use it yet because the module antennae and cables are missing and I do not know if it is worthy to spend $160.00 to get this module. Are they good enough GPS?

They are a good clear screen and work in most lighting conditions. I have been very pleased with mine apart from the software issue when using Navionic Gold charts. It is not very easy to quick save your current position or waypoint as the WPT/WPT switch will only zoom into the chart. The manual suggests it should save as a Waypoint!! Current Lowrance units have a higher resolution screen but I have found my 335CDF very acceptable and easy to use.

Re: Which Chartplotter do you own?

My wife just got me a Garmin 440S. I wanted to see if anyone had any comments regarding this Chartplotter / Sounder.
