Hey All,

I currently have a HumminBird 727 Fish Finder that came rigged with my Lowe FS175 Boat.

The unit is defective and HumminBird is sending a replacement.

After using it a few times, I can honestly say that the only thing I use it for it Water surface temp, and Debth, Since I don't really understand the sonar readings, and the unit will often show fish but we don't usually catch anything when it shows them, so I don't really consider it a tool.

I am thinking of putting the 727 in the front to use with the trolling motor, and upgreading to a color unit. The color units look soo much clearer, and hopefully will be easier to understand....

I am hoping to get GPS maps with the color unit, not just track plotting, I want to see maps of the lakes. Hopefully with all USA lakes.

The nudge nudge, wink wink I got from the Electronics guy at Gander Mountain was that HumminBird fish finders were not soo good, and that Lowrance were much better units.

I can't say I know enough about them to make an educated choice.

I want to spend no more than $500-$600 on this unit, and would like it to be somewhat easy to use/understand.

I want atleast dual beam, with atleast 500 Watts RMS (4000 Watts Peek-to-peek), Which is what my current Humminbird 727 has.

My primary use will be under 100 feet of depth, but I want to be able to go on big water, like the great lakes, and have the unit still fully functional with the deap waters.

I hope I have provided enough information to help me, but if not just ask I will answer whatever I can.

Thanks,

-TheChad

Well, I agree that Lowrance are better sonars than H'birds, Chad, but for a combo unit I would go with Garmin.

The GPSMAP 178C combo unit is about as good as you can get on your budget, and you will have bux left over for map cards for your favorite fishing holes.

http://www.iboats.com/mall/index.cg...147379356&search_in_category=f&view_id=220232

If that's the case, why do the pro's use Fih finders costing several thousand dollars? Instead of a $99 fih finder?

Crabby is just being crabby.

Sonars require technique in setting them up and skill at reading the returns. Guys like Bill Dance can read 'em. I can't get any further than seeing that there is something between my boat and the bottom, but that's enough for me. :)

Oh, and Bill Dance doesn't pay thousands for that blingy thing. The maker donates it free to get it on TV.

How good of a fish finder is the Garmin? I know they are a leader in GPS, but what about the Fish Finder portion?

Thanks,

-TheChad
