The following photos show the pieces that your are missing on your control cables. First, you need the stainless steel gate that holds the throttle cable on the motor's throttle arm/pin seembly. Second, you need the spring load pin that fits into the gearshift handle on your motor.

Once purchased and installed on your cables, this is how the cables should look when attached to your motor.

Something that I forgot to mention - it doesn't matter if your control unit and cables are the pre 79 version or the post 79 version. All that matters is that you have the correct cables for the control unit, and the correct parts for the cable ends. Go get the gear shift pin and the throttle bracket gate and you will be fine.

On the shift pin, there is a small pin going through the end of it - you will have to remove that to insert it into the cable end. Once the larger pin is in place, you put the smaller pin back in place. You'll see what I am talking about when you buy the part.

The boat is ready to go, the weather has been checked - time to go fishing!

That angle looks about right - just hook the steering up and runa it back and forth a few times to see if everything is working as it should.

If the difference is only an inch or so, I would say the condition is normal.
