Re: Which deep cycle battery

So how long are you going to be out trolling?

I troll a lot in a 14' jon boat with a 42# Minn Kota Endura, usually on speed 2-3. I'm running dual group 29 batteries and each battery lasts about 4 hours, maybe a bit longer. I have them on a battery switch and run them independent (instead of running them in parallel) since they last longer that way.

I would seriously consider a digital TM since they use far less power than the ol' speed coil TMs. I'd be using one of them now, but found them to be noisier than the speed coil TMs and I couldn't have the extra noise for my style of fishing, trophy stipers. I've used a 55# Minn Kota Traxxis (digital) and a 45# MotorGuide Varimax and the Traxxis is worth the extra money. Lots of reasons, but the Traxxis is better, much better. When I was using the digital TMs I could troll 8 hours on 1 group 29 battery. That alone could have saved me the expense of buying another battery, but, i reverted back to my old speed coil TMs.

Another nice thing about the digital motors, their speed control is variable and you are not stuck with the "5" speeds. I've been out many times with a speed coil TM where speed 2 is too slow and speed 3 is too fast,,, a digital TM would have been able to dial in the exact speed I wanted.

BTW, if the TM is going to be your sold means of propulsion, I wouldn't go with anything less than a 40-45# TM. If the wind/waves kick up you will be glad you have the extra power.
