Hi
Could anyone tell me what is the best "tester" to test the various ignition components on outboards?

I've seen one or two merc-o-tronic testers on ebay in the past, and my OMC manuals suggest a Stevens tester, but would a motor cycle ignition tester do the same job?

There is one on ebay that looks like it might be alright, Look here , would this do the job?

If not, how much do the proper testers cost?

Thanks in advance
Steve

Re: Which ignition tester

Thanks rodbolt.
I just wanted to get something that would test most parts, like charge and sensor coils, powerpacks, ignition coils, etc.

Thanks to this forum, I've made a hobby out of fixing up old non runners and I thought that being able to test these parts, rather than just replacing them, would save me some money!

I suppose I really should try to learn a lot more about the electrics side of things, but can't find any books that are comprehensive enough. Even the manuals I've got just show how to do the tests, they don't really explain how it all works.

(BTW, would that motorcycle tester work?)

Thanks again
Steve

Re: Which ignition tester

arco products makes a really nice electrical manual as well. one of the manuals that I used extensively was an old MOTORS chassis and electrical. remember trons are trons and it does not matter what the application or location of manufacture. trons behave the same.the ignition in your car and bike works with the exact same principle. the largest difference is the shape of the components and the control circuits.
but in the end its all about collapsing a magnetic field at the proper time:)
good luck and keep posting
