Which Mercruiser outdrive should I use?

I have a 1985 '28 Century Meridien Cabincruiser with a 260 hp v8. I am looking to replace a Alpha 1 outdrive. I have two used units I am choosing from. I know neither is the best to use, but these are available and affordable. My question is which one would work best for my boat? The choices are 1. '74 Ford 302 (i am guessing a 888???) or 2. '79 Chevy 305 with a 228. Your input is greatly appreciated.

Neither. Both are a step backwards. Have you looked into SEI drives?

I have looked at the SEI's, but unfortunately they are too expensive at this time as well. These are the two outdrives I have to work with and just need to know that they will work and which one would be best suited. Thanks again for the input.

If I'm not mistaken, and I could be, those two outdrives should be identical.

Well the 888/228 should be pretty much the same: a 1.50:1 drive. Same with the 233 drive, and all are essentially an Alpha I with minor differences. Why are you replacing the alpha I/what's wrong with it? Can you not just replace the upper or lower unit?

I believe it was in salt water for an extended period of time. It is extremely corroded and seems to be eaten away(the whole outdrive). The mechanic said everything would have to be replaced. He said if I could locate one he would put it on. I just have limited funds at this time and I could get either of these outdrives complete for little cost.

I certainly understand that. Just be aware that any time you buy used it is a gamble. I hope it works out for you.

So does everyone agree it would be more about which outdrive is the best shape more than anything? It sounds as though the gearing ratios and pretty much everything else is the same on these two outdrives. I really appreciate everyones responses to my post, can't tell you how much I appreciate your experience and expertise!!!

which outdrive is the best shape

Exactly.

If you live in an area with salt water, and apparently you do, then you know what salt water can do. I would look over the drives carefully. Anything that old, if it hasn't been regularly maintained, can be a nightmare to try to work on. Bolt seized up or broken. Unable to pull various parts due to corrosion, etc.

Buyer beware.
