The 18 and 5.5 are different. Nevertheless, the broken piece of aluminum we are looking at on the 18 is part of the shifter shaft. So, you need a shift shaft AND a handle. And yes the powerhead has to come off to replace the shifter shaft. So you need a powerhead gasket too. And the little lockplate that secures the screw on the inner end of the shifter shaft.

Here is what I ordered, I'm hoping its everything I need excluding the power head gasket.

you will need to build a flywheel holder in order to torque the flywheel nut.

Got the new coils, condensors, and points put in today. And guess what, the points did come with an oiler wick...yay. Still need to replace the plug wires and gap the points. Got a bunch of other work to do before I get it all back together. Like pulling the power head to replace the shift lever and examining the impeller. Since it will all be in pieces I want to repaint everything as well.

Been keeping myself busy with stripping the old paint, sanding, and painting. Unfortunately I'm not going with the original color. It will be a dark maroon with white left as original. Took apart the gear case and replaced all my seals. Used the square end of an 8" mini socket extension to pop out the shift lever brass bushing, and the socket end to punch it back in.
