which one is better?

I picked up a small cuddy with a 1985 Johnson 115 on it that needs some minor ignition work. When I talked to a marine tech buddy of mine about some parts, he didn't seem too fond of that particular motor. He knows that I have a 78 140 hp johnson sitting on an engine stand and reccomended I use that instead. So my question is....... What is the better motor if both are both running good. The 1985 115............. or the 1978 140? I'd like to hear some opinions.

Both put out about the same hp at prop... I would go with the 115.

If there's nothing wrong with the later motor (outside of the electrical issue), I'd go with that one...

The 115 has been a proven motor since 1969. I would say go with it. Keep the other motor for a spare.

Wow..... I'm glad I checked here before going through the labor of swapping motors. But thats why we have forums like this. For novices like me to hear the opinion of more then just one person. One thing I did fail to mention in my origonal post was that the 1985 motor is a VRO motor. Does that make any difference in opinions?

I'd disconnect the oiling side of the vro and mix your fuel 50:1.

I agree with boobie. Disconnect the VRO and premix.
