Which Pickup should I buy

Hello All,

This is going to be my first time posting here so here it goes. Does anybody know what size pickup I need for the following boat, without having a overkill. In other words I don't want more than I really need. I want to be in the years of 2004 or 2005. The boat will likely have a length overall of 32' or 33'. The boat will likely have a dry Weight of 11,800 lbs. Here are the tanks
Fresh Water Tanks 50 Gallons
Fuel Tanks 172 Gallons
Holding Tanks 30 Gallons

This is not including a trailer which I guess weights around 2000 lbs?
I am not sure how much weight to add when it comes to the tanks.

I would like to make a 2004 or 2005 Dodge 2500 Quad cab 4x4 HEMI. Not sure which trim ST, SLT, Laramine
I am not sure which wheel base to get, to be honest I not sure what a wheelbase does to the pick. 140.5 or 160.5 ?

Is there a online tool that will fique this out for me?

If you have not fiqure it out yet, yes I am a NOOB.
I hope I at least made some sense.

Overkill doesn't really apply to the boat you are talking about!

How much towing you going to be doing? You are talking 1 ton territory with your load, and absolutely diesel. Your total load is going to be well above the towing capacity for each of your mentioned choices, if your hull is 11,800 dry. (add at least another 5000# on that for your listed fluids, plus trailer, plus gear.)

Bigger question is why? Very few people that own boats that size have vehicles to pull them. They are generally kept at a marina, in a slip, and hauled in and out by the marina. If you are trying to turn that into a trailerable boat, you are going to have an issue. (that boat is most likely WELL over 8 feet wide, aka you need permits every time you move it on a public road)

Most boats the size you are talking will be an oversize load (wide load over 102 inches). If you don't know what you need to tow that size boat with I would look into a smaller boat until you get experience towing.

Jose - scale your dreams down some. Then pick a boat and tow rig. What you are asking about is unrealistic. Just an honest opinion.

You don't want a Hemi if you are towing 13-14K, you want a diesel.

You're really on the edge with the spec'd boat. You almost need a F650/medium size truck for such a rig.

You'd be okay with a F350/F450 4x4 diesel crew cab, but I personally wouldn't want to pull such a large load (size and weight wise) very far.

Something that large needs a professional truck driver and a flat bed tractor/trailer truck if it was being pulled very far.

These size boats remain in marinas most of their lives.

Better check the state drivers license laws as well. You may need an endorsement. I suggest you pull into an Interstate rest area and look at the rigs coming and going. Pay attention to the loading and what they are pulling that load with. A brief chat with the driver should give you an idea of what you are up against.

I've pulled a similar load with my F350 Diesel 6 spd crew cab and I can tell you that you do not want to try it with anything less. Moving it is one thing, (and that hemi will be working it's guts out) but stopping and controlling it is another. The dual rear wheels make a HUGE difference in stability. And with that level of weight, air bags will help with keeping the truck from squatting at all. And if you plan to do frequent or long distance hauling, you can't beat a gooseneck trailer for safety and pulling.

My opinion is also that you need a diesel dually for that load. I used to regularly pull 15K with my dodge cummins 2500. Truck is equipped with airbags and 315 tires. It handled the load fine, had plenty of power, but a dually would have certainly been justified. The Hemi is certainly out of it's league.

For those years the F350 would be my choice as well. I have a 2010 V10 gasser F350 and you can load up the front axle without IFS worries like the chev.
I'm not a dodge guy but I have plenty of seat time in them and the trannys from the years you are picking from are not the best. The cummins is a great motor though and with the new diesels emissions systems the older cummins are commanding premium prices.
The 6.0 can be built to be reliable but you do need a 1 ton diesel for your load.

Yeah, so if you plan on pulling your boat through a ditch or over the chevy test ramps you'll definitely want the Chevy...but if you actually plan to tow it down the road then the F350...

I'll bet you drive that Mack after the sun goes down too. Friends don't let friends drive Macks in the daylight.
Now this is a real truck ( 1994 Peterbilt 379 3406b cat engine). This is a diesel dually with no bed flex.

Thats true, all the diesel trucks have trouble keeping the autos working, that's why I have a 6 speed manual. I read Dodge is the only one of the big 3 to still offer a manual transmission. I realize your not looking at new, just found it to an interesting point.

Think again. The Superduty might look good on paper but that's about the only place it does.
