Re: Which prop for bow lift?

I am guessing that I am going to have a rather long 'session' with the prop guy come spring! I am thinking that the first thing I need to check is to insure that my tach readings are correct? All I have for a tach is the dash gauges that came with the boat. I will also have a GPS by spring to get a much better idea as to the true speed my boat is moving at. Again, only have the dash mounted speedo.

Steve, the prop guy, says he starts with the boat on the trailer, checking motor height and angles first. THEN runs the boat as is to check speed/trim/rpm etc. After that moves to prop and setting changes as needed.

I am learning a lot as I move into this. My last boat was easy compared to this. It's kinda fun!

Actually, having considered the options here, my best recommendation(given what's available); is the Solas HR Titan 3 15 X 14 .

That should get you about 500-600 more rpm, plus what ever can be gained by getting the bow up a little. A potential exists for 600-800 rpm gain as well as speed.

I will pay close attention to that one then. I will be running it, if there is not any ice, between 29 Dec and 1 Jan. Have a short duck season those days. I will double check some numbers, water conditions permitting. Lake Eris can be rather rough at that time of year.

Thanks again for ALL the help. Love this site. Great place for an education.

Re: Which prop for bow lift?

am getting about 5000RPM at WOT with the stock prop. I am not expecting massive bow lift but right now I am 'plowing'. I know it is not a performance boat but I also know how a boat should ride. It has to come up some.

I can't seem to find the degree of rake on the discriptions on most props. I find that interesting. Do most people not research things that much?

I am also considering a 5" offset jack plate. First for the 'teeter totter' effect and second to get the prop into a little cleaner water.

I have looked at both the Rebel and the Viper, both are interesting. The Rebel only comes in a 13.5X18 as you stated. I was concerned about in increase in diameter and was not sure what the change in pitch would do. The Viper does seem to be my first choice to test.

I am hoping that the cupping on the prop will help with the blow outs.

I am looking forward to working with the prop guy here in town. I have talked with some people who have had work done by him and all seemed quite pleased with his work. All had repairs done, no prop testing.

Thanks for all the help.

The jack plate will definitely help you out in the ways you state and help you dial in your prop by allowing easy motor hight adjustments. I would recommend a 6" Rapid Jack. It's super easy and fast to adjust.

I will be sure to bring that up with the 'prop guy' next spring. I am going to need some help on this one. MUCH more boat than I have owned before.

Re: Which prop for bow lift?

You said it lives up to the hype, what were you trying to accomplish with it? I assume I would stay with the same diameter and pitch with that prop?

Really I don't know. Another question is why did I buy a prop made to fit the higher HP 4 3/4" gearboxes and then make an adapter to use on my 4 1/4 gearbox? Reason for that was that I really wanted a 24P and the closest I could get was 23P in the larger diameter hub. Since the blade tips were 4 1/4 as I recall, I measured and they would clear my AV plate so I went with it.

On performance, I can't say whether the larger diameter, thicker blades, or possible lack of rake as compared to my SS Ballistics is what caused the WOT mph to crap out when it did. I'll say this, my boat is really sensitive to bow lift and if it isn's there (trim in too much) the rpms and mph suffer big time. I don't specifically remember if I felt that I had comparable lift or not.

Ifyou are considering a jackplate....and I as well as others would recommend it...install the plate first....then run the boat again and adjust as needed for optimum performance with your present prop. After getting the new numbers you will have a much better end result. Reason being if you get a new prop then add the jackplate most likley the prop will need to b changed to obtain the best performance. Always when optimizing a boats performance you need to do it in the correct order to save you money headaches and not be chasing the wrong problem.

It would seem a 4 blade with high rake would rule the day. In the end they provide the most overall lift..bow included. Wait for Dhadley he runs in skinny water and is a expert in such matter's.
