Which sealant for screw holes, 4200, Boat Life Caulk or Liquid ?

I am putting an older Whaler together and don't need any water getting into the hull. I am sure its' seen enough. Was thinking 5200 but that is too much.

5200 if it is a permanant repair.

4200 if you want back in there

Permanent ? Is anything in life permanent ? Console to deck, side rails, Igloo cooler brackets to deck, battery and fuel tank holddowns to deck. I don't see this stuff coming off fo another ten years but who knows hardware might need to be replaced or something like that. I just want stuff secured pretty good for long while and to keep water out forever.

You didn't mentioned if the surface is fiberglass/gelcoat or metal. If it's metal, 5200 and 4200 will both require 3M's adhesive promoter treatment prior installation. Even then, bonding strength is less then half of that from fiberglass and wood.

Called a bunch of West Marine stores and took a pole. 6 said 4200 and 1 said Life caulk. So my boat is 4.2 x permanent since it is a 1968 Katama. will call Whalertown.

Read the data sheets for both and they're nearly identical products. So it's a Tastes Great - Less Filling argument.

You didn't say what sort of holes you are caulking. Just sealing otherwise good holes - caulk. Wollowed out holes, fill with epoxy and re-drill to proper size, then add a little caulk to the screw threads when you install it.

Caulk for small (< or = 1/8") gaps. The polyurethane variety lasts best - 4200 or Boat Life.

Caulk w/extra adhesive properties (5200) for bedding things you don't want to come loose until replacement time, like a port window frame.

Adhesive for connecting things a physical fastener like a screw isn't desirable for, like where you don't want to make a hole. Epoxy is the common choice.

Tensile (pull-apart) strength -

4200/BL = 300 psi
5200 = 450 psi
Epoxy = 400,000 psi
