Re: Which sonar/gps?

Well looked at both the 540 and 527 side by side for 3 hrs on Wed. I actually bought the salesman lunch cuz it took so long.

After all said and done I walked out with a Lowrance 525 with the navonics gold chip for $769. There was a $75 rebate on the chip. I got the 525 because of my t top, as it has the external antenna.

After getting a crash course on both of them, I felt I didn't need the 3d graphics, The vision chip for the garmin was another $300 and I really saw no striking differences between the two units that would make me want one or the other.

I asked about customer service and warranty between both units, and was told hands down garmin has it. But I was told if the lowance unit went bad, to take it back to them and they would send it back for me if it was outside the warranty. One thing I thought was nice was that if anything went wrong with whatever I chose; bring it back within the year and they would do an over the counter exchange for it.

I guess the only other upgrade I'm going to do to it is a fuel flow gauge.

Thanks very much for the input on this

One tip: Make sure you set the sensitivity high enough. Usually around 80 percent. You want to see false return in the depth you are fishing. If you set it where the screen is clean then You will miss a lot of fish. Turn it up as high as you can stand it. This allows you to see single bait fish. When you see the bait fish spread out all over then probably not any large fish feeding on the bait fish. When you see them school up in tight balls you can bet there are large fish feeding and all the bait fish want to be in the center of the ball.
