Hello All,

I just acquired a 2009 Larson 180 SEI with 20 hours. It has a 3.0L and an SX-A drive.

Engine:
3.0L GLP-J
Model: 3869388
Serial: 4012248171

Drive:
SX-A
Model: 3883603
Serial: 4202236903 or 4202236003 (hard to read).

Transom Assembly:

Model: SX ALT 42
3883720
4151191237

The issue, I think, is a whirring/whining noise in forward gear only. It is especially noticeable at idle and up to about 1500 rpm. Trim angle does not seem to change it.

I am new to V-P drives so I don't know if this is normal.

I did check the drive gear lube, it is clean and full.

Ideas? Am I paranoid?

Thanks.

What's the tension on the belts? All should have 6-13 mm of movement when pushed in the middle of the belt (from pulley to pulley) with normal thumb pressure. An overtightened belt can make a whirring noise.

It has one Serpentine belt.

Ahhh sorry, looked too quickly - though your engine was a few years older. Just a stab but what's the tension on the serpentine belt like?

Seems OK, there is some deflection when pressed. I wouldn't think a belt would whine in one gear only?

does the pitch of the whirring increase with the throttle?

Hard to tell. The engine/exhaust noise sort of takes over. I really do not notice it at cruising speed (3500 RPM).

You'll have to go searching for the noise and try to pinpoint where it is coming from. That might be easier to do on muffs in a driveway.

Has anyone with a 3.0L/SX-A heard this? Normal?

Thanks.

Did you go and actually look for this noise? There's several things that can cause noise and we can't hear where it is coming from.

Yes, cannot duplicate on muffs. Must be in FORWARD and in water. It is coming from the transom arrea. It is more pronounced at idle.

It's a "whine". Not objectionable just wondering if other Volvo Pentas do that?
