Rattle cans are really not a good choice although thats what most people use because it is easy! If you have access even to a small compressor and a decent spray gun, Tow your boat down to the local autobody supply house and have them match your color in a urethane paint! Preferably Imron by Dupont! This is an extremly durable paint and is really slick! degrease your out drive with a wax and grease remover, (also available through the paint supplier), Then sand with 320 grit wet paper! Treat any bare spots with some kind of zink rich primer (also available in spray cans at the same place), Mix the paint as per instructions and spray two to three coats on your outdrive! This Paint is very toxic and should be done outside or in a place with lots of ventilation! Wear a paint resperator! Also make sure there is nothing around that might get overspray on it as you will not get it off!!

Hope this helps

Hasbeen

Re: White Searay Mercruiser paint help

Many thanks for the info. I do own a air compressor. I also own a small Paashe spray gun and a small grit blaster that uses 60 micron alumimun oxide. It will strip plastic with out damaging the surface. How thick is the paint? I plan on using a airbrush w/ the heavy tip set-up and it will shoot paint about the thickness of milk. It will be nice in the tight spots. How much paint do you think I will need?....Many thanks

I think that the smallest quantity you can buy is a quart! It is rather expensive as you have to buy the catalist also but you do not have to thin it as when you add the catalist it is ready to spray,, You cannot reuse the paint after it is mixed as it will chemically dry so clean your equipment emediatly after use! (Laguer thinner) You may want to use a bit larger spray gun as it might be difficuly to keep the flow going with the air brush! If you strip the outdrive first (good idea) then after you prime it you will have to scuff it before you paint, Tell the people at the paint shop what you are doing and they will be more than happy to help!!

Hasbeen

The small spray gun I was talking about is a automotive one touch-up model it will handle auto paint easily. I was wondering about the viscosity of it. Milk, emamel or what thickness is the paint and primer?
