My youngest daughter unbuckled her seatbelt tonight as we were leaving the farm. I put my flashers on and pulled to the side. As I stopped a car pulled alongside and a woman about 50 stopped and asked was I ok. Not the awnser to your question but similar.

I put my car in the ditch and two girls gave me a ride to the gas station to call for a tow.

I have stopped to help two old ladies out in the middle of nowhere. They wouldnt ride with me, but I stopped at the next town and called AAA for them.

I have never hitched a ride though.

Ken

I slung a rod in my '74 Yamaha 650 out in West Texas once. I was walking back to town and a couple of GIs gave me a ride (about 3 miles) back to a town.

Around '78-79, I had a restored '66 Chevy truck stolen while I was in a bar** outside of Wash. DC. I was walking back to the base and another Marine picked me up and took me back to the barracks.

**
No, I wasn't in there drinking and watching the strippers. I was giving them Bible classes when they weren't dancing.
**

In about '83, I had a starter conk out in a hot rod '55 Ford Truck I built back in the late 70's. It was out in West Texas too, about 4 miles from a town. A rancher picked me up and took me to a service station/garage to get a new one. He picked me up a little while later as I was walking back to my truck too!

Nope, I never hitched a ride or took a ride that was offered. I knew better. Scared!! Didn't anyone see the movie about the Hillside strangler? I think that was the movie.
Bassy

I was young in a different era.

If I was afoot on the road people stopped and gave me a ride, If I saw someone afoot I stopped and gave them a lift.

It was normal then.

When I was in my late teens or early twenties, I got turned around in the big woods and came out nearly 6 miles from my truck. So I started walking down the road, it was getting dark, I was all camoflaged and carrying a rifle. An older man(probably in his late 60's) and his wife stopped and asked if I needed a ride. I accepted gratefully. That is something that probably wouldn't happen today.

I have taken and given rides, like JB said it was a different time.

I still give rides...Guess that diffrent time is what ya make of it. Don't get me wrong I still use some disgression before I stop. A hunter with a rifle...No problem, I've both done it and recieved!

From Pax River Maryland to Buffalo, NY in 1968 while stationed at Pax NAS to get my car. 7 rides the last to my door. Uniform was an asset.

When I was 18 or something, hitched rides to the speedskating facility 45 km away. Got a hitch once from a beautiful stewardess, her luck when she ran a flat and I changed the tyre for her. Nothing came of it because I had dirty hands :D

Gave my share of people a lift when I had a car and once kicked one out who started to lecture me on those capitalist swine with cars, to much money and no morals etc.etc. Dropped him off in the middle of nowhere with the advice to find a mule or something to solve his transportation needs. He couldn't even throw a straight stone, missed the car by a mile. :D :D

I'm with neumanns on this one, If someone looks like they have troubles or look lost I will see if I can help. I once picked up a man and his two sons and a beagle who were lost and about 5 miles from their truck. They were rabbit hunting and the dog got on a deer track and took them on quite the hike.

Re: Who has been picked up

three years ago, while on a boat trip, we were at a marina in SC. Girlfriend wanted to go the beach, and where were told it was in walking distance. We started walking, followed the directions given, and were nowhere close to finding water. Half an hour into our walk, a nice family in a Tahoe, stopped & offered us a ride. They took us to the beach, and gave us the proper directions to get back to the marina!

I think there is a big difference between on the roadways and on the waterways.

I have spent more time that I'd care to calculate towing folks on the water. Sometimes you tend to get mad when you help someone on the water that is absolutely clueless, but you do it with a smile. They are, after all, at the mercy of the elements and many times frightened.

We, concientious boaters know that. I've towed some real jerks, only to be thanked profusely by their wives and children.

All I ever ask for is a Thank You.

I'm with DJ. Usually end up towing two a year off the lake. Just hope I am as lucky when my turn comes.
