Re: Who is on this board?

Where did this come from? Talk about a blast from the past.
I don't know if us “go fast” boaters are just tolerated more now or there is a lot more of us these days on this board but I don't feel so alone here anymore. I must also say when I first came around here a few years ago some came off a little rough with there quoting regs from the Coast Guard ( JB ) but over the years I have come to respect there knowledge and find myself agreeing with them “most” of the time.
P.S. Like I said (years ago) I am not going anywhere. I like it to much here. My wife call it my support group for anytime I am not on the water and also credits it for keeping our marriage together. She think if I didn't talk to you guys about boats I would talk to her about them (all the time). Don't get me wrong she likes boats but she also likes other stuff. I love boats and ....................well....................I am thinking................aaahhhhh.................stereos. Ya Stereo's, I like stereos !!!! Hummmm I could use a new stereo for my boat. Did I ever tell you about my boat. I love my boat.
F_

Re: Who is on this board?

35 year old wakeboarder, have an inboard with 454. not much reason for me to go faster than wakeboarding speed, i don't like to see the gas gauge drop so fast!

i don't have any problems with warnings about doing stupid things or less than ideal practices. boating and the water are unforgiving environments, lessons are often learned the hard way.

f-screenname, i love talking about my boat too. start talking about boat stereos and my ears perk up. i've got 1300 watts of rockford fosgate amps, 6- 6.5" speakers, 12" subwoofer and i'd like to add more. my boat is 23' and the folks near the back can't hear the sub all that well when we're wakeboarding.

i don't throw rollers at people fishing, i don't do power turns to pick up a fallen rider, and i don't play the stereo too loud in the morning.

i give tows to any broken down boaters, catch me at the right time and you might even find a fishing pole in my boat. (shhh)

I am 35 years old and have been boating my entire life. I am a "racer type" as you guys like to say.
I never every run hard without my PFD wich is also impact resistant. I respect every boat on the water and usually run hard only in the ocean.
I never drink while boating and love to go fast.
If you are on the water your OK by me. I think we get a bad rap because our boats are fast and loud and people think we are all aholes.I and everyone I know with performance boats are very skilled and have years of experience. I can be cruising at 35 and get the finger or be pulling up to a dock and get dirty looks. I love all types of boats, I respect you if you in a yacht or a dingy, as long as your out having fun and being responsible.
Sorry to rant
Thanks,
Scott

Driver F1-52 Offshore Addiction
Throttles P5-12 GIGI Motorsports
www.addictivewatersports.com

Re: Who is on this board?

I'm 44 years old and interested in max fun and max safety with minimum budget. Fishing, tubing, & skiing with my family. I mostly frequent smaller inland lakes so far, want to try the delta someday, though. I don't mind being limited to 25 mph or so on water. 55 horses doesn't cost much to run. Present hull doesn't need more than that anyway. If I had the cash I'd like to go faster too- in the big 3 dimensional lake up above (private pilot). If you want to go fast, and have the sense to do it safely and courteously more power to you. And I wouldn't mind the stinking water fleas if they'd get a clue about safety and courtesy, but so far I haven't seen very many who get that. PWC operators should have to pass a test or something; rental outfits should require a test before renting.

Re: Who is on this board?

I'm 41 years old, and my fastest boat goes 38 mph...not anywhere near the speed demons some of you have. I enjoy fishing and the watersports too (tubing and boarding).

I can't stand disrespectfull speed boaters and PWC'ers. I think that there are more morons on the water now with the advent of the popular jet propulsion sea doo boats and the like. They don't have to worry about scrapping props, so away they go wherever they darn please zooming by fisherman and canoists like they where buoys in the water!

Because of these nitwits, all boaters in Canada need to get a safe boating course now and age restrictions are in place for all watercraft. Fortunately with the course, it has improved the safety on our waters, but you still come across the occasional buffoon zooming by at 20 paces smiling and waving!!!

So I'm all for having fun and blasting as fast as you can...but safely. Do it on open waters away from others and give plenty of distance between you and smaller watercraft(and fishermen).

Re: Who is on this board?

Wow, interesting topic - what's weird is that it was started 2 years aog!

I am 36 and own a Grady White 192 w/ 150 Yamaha 4 stroke w/ss prop. Been boating all my life and born and raised in Florida.

Last year while boating on the St. Johns River north of Deland some yahoo in 21 foot center console - no speed boat - obviously was going above the posted 25 limit for this particular reach of river - managed to hit a log and land the boat into the canopy of the hardwood swamp bordering the river - ejecting all the passengers from the boat. Don't think it was overpowered.

The HP limit imposed by the CG and boat manufacturer serves as liability notice -safety thing and to keep the manufacturer out of court. I don't overpower my vessel, so I am not up on the Federal laws or the results of violating the section of the law regulating boat horsepower. The real issue here is knowing how to navigate, understand the rules of water and being respectful of them, even if you disagree with them - such as manatee protection speed zones.

There is a place and time for going fast as your boat can go. Just be respectful of others while doing it.

FlyboyMark stated how boaters in Florida are curtious. They may be in his neck of the state, but I have encountered way too many on the water with hot rod boats ignoring posted speed zones and so forth. Don't get me wrong, my Grady is no speed demon, but she'll do 45 mph - not bad for a heavy boat. Don't even bring up boat ramp behavior on Saturday afternoon. I am sick of all the rude inconsiderate drunks I encounter. We are shifting our boating days away from the weekends to avoid the hassels and poor behavior of others.

FSN...33yr pontoon, there not vary fast but make a good family platform for my young kids. (Family is very important to me) I would just like to weigh in on this. I do not resent speed, speedboats, or PWC's for that matter. What I resent is Inconsiderate or Incompetant operators. 9hp or 900hp doesent matter, exceding your crafts limits or exceding the operators skills is not taken kindly. From what I see locally it is unfortunate that all to often the incompetence is often related to Horsepower via either lack of skill or lack of common sense.I do not make this assumption, It just becomes painfully evident who they are. Oh sure I see the occasional idot in a small horspower rig but it just seems to me the larger the rig the better the odds though. I attribute this primarily to engine size...The bigger the motor the more pronounced the errors become. If ya can handle your rig and have good common sense I say "Nail It".

Just cause it's back there doesent mean you should open it up unless you have the faculty's to control it is what I'm trying to say. :)

ScottyB...That has gotta be a blast,... Welcome Aboard.

Hello all,,.

I'm 53 in years and 23 in mind.My brain often writes checks that my body can't cash. But when the lake isn't busy my '93 Sierra with 130 horse Yamaha I/O 16' fibreglass bowrider can move at 50MPH with three adults. No problems pulling skiers or tubes.I like to move at a brisk pace.

But the main selling point is that it is low to the water making fishing easier.I feel that I have the best of both worlds--FISHING AND PLEASURE BOATING.

Re: Who is on this board?

I am a 40 year old male, just purchased a crownline 250cr cabin cruiser with 310HP (454). Top speed is about 42 - 45 mph, which gives me all I need for waterskiing, fishing etc.
I learned sailing when I was 4 in the Netherlands. (yes I am Dutch)
Talking about not being allowed to do much?
Check the laws in the Netherland....
This country (USA) still has the freedom and Liberty to have serious fun. And with that I do not just mean speed, but overall camping enjoyment, beautiful woods and streams that you can use for pleasure.
Just wish some of the *******s (am I allowed to use these words here?) would clean up after themselves. Before you know it, government will shut down things because of that!!!

Ronald (aka Hans)

Re: Who is on this board?

34 years old, 16.5 foot fishin' rig with 125 horse Merc. My rig only hits in the 40 mph range, wouldn't mind if it could go faster, but it isn't an emergency. My lake, despite being 45,000 square acres, has a 50 mph limit, so there are very few speedboats here. The water is also too rough most of the time and there are enough fishing rigs trolling for big fish that going fast is difficult anyway. Personally I could care less if someone wants to hang a huge motor on a boat, I just hope they have the brains to rig it right and the skill to handle it right. I will say that last year a speedboat clipped a small sailboat at dusk, seriously injuring the people on board. The speedboat got off the water and disappeared instead of turning back to assist the severely damaged sailboat. Speedboaters get a bad rap because they are the ones getting in the most trouble. We have our 4th of july fireworks over the water here and there are at least a hundred if not more boats anchored to watch the works. Invariably its a speedboat that comes ripping through the grouping of boats, causing the Sheriffs boats to give chase. Most stop but some just keep going because the Sheriffs boat can't catch them. While there are a lot of responsible people with fast boats, you do have to own the fact that there are more irresponsible people with fast boats out there and not get bent out of shape when it is pointed out. Lets face it, this board consists of people from all over the world. If the vast majority is saying they have experienced negative speedboating experiences, that should tell you something. As long as you are doing the right thing, don't sweat it. It is true that it is no big deal to increase power in your car, and it is also true that a lot of people die driving those overpowered cars as well.

Re: Who is on this board?

My turn....

I am a 43yr old male, retired Coast Guard and living in Virginia. I was a longtime member of the newsgroup "rec.boats", but decided to leave because of the constant political flame-wars and constant OT threads.

I grew up in upstate NY (Poughkeepsie area) and my family had a summer cottage way way WAY up in the Adirondack Mts. I have been boating since I was about 10. My family owned a grumman aluminum fishing boat with a 5.5hp Johnson Seahorse OB. Check this photo, it's a hoot!

http://members.aol.com/ammonc/butch1971.jpg

Yes, that is me at holding a smallmouth bass and a perch at Lake George, NY back in 1971. :D

Then, when my folks bought the summer cottage, we got an old Thompson mahogany v-hull with a 40hp Evinrude. The boat, boathouse, etc... all came with the house when we bought it.

http://members.aol.com/ammonc/Thompson-40.jpg

That was a classic old boat but was slow as a tugboat. We sold it in the late 70's and got a Glastron fiberglass trihull, which really cruised on the water.

My folks got up there in age and decided to sell the house, boats, etc... in the late 80's and move from the Adirondack Mts. and settle down in northern Georgia near Lake Hartwell (GA SC border). They rediscovered their love for boating on Lake Hartwell, and bought an old 1975 Sea Star, 17' trihull with a 165hp Mercruiser inline 6. Then back in 1999, a few years before my dad passed away, he called me up one day and said, "Hey son, you know, mom and I don't get out that much anymore and haven't used the old boat in about a year. So, I thought about it and if you want the boat - come on down and get it. FREE." :D

http://members.aol.com/ammonc/boatyard.jpg

I love this old boat and it still runs like a top after all these years. It can hit 36mph WOT on a smooth freshwater lake.

If you want to know even more about me and whatnot, click on my website that I made on AOl:

http://members.aol.com/ammonc/butch.html

Butch A.

Re: Who is on this board?

ButchA - That Thompson brought back a few memories. My mom and her husband got one in about 1960 with one of the first Johnson V4 50 hp on the back. They had it in a marina near Hudson NY.

I got my fist boat in 1970 and it went from there:

11' sail
15' with a 33hp Johnny
16' Glaspar with a 50 hp Chrysler
17' Cobia with a 75 hp Rude
18' Starcraft with a 100 hp Johnny
25' Venture sail
19' Glastron with an 80 hp Merc & later a 140 hp Rude
27 1/2' Flybridge with a 270 Volvo
13' tinny with 9.9 Johnny
17' Grumman canoe with a 5 hp Rude
23' Wellcraft CC with twin OMC SeaDrives

We have done most of our boating in South Florida and all boats have been trailerable.

Over the years I have seen all of the idiots mentioned above. Most you can ignor or get away from thank God. Ramp courtesy (or rather the lack thereof is the one thing that gets me goin). We have one marina at Black Point on Biscayne Bay where folk come from miles around on Sunday afternoon to sit on a grassy bank overlooking the ramp. They bring coolers and lawn chairs and spend the afternoon watching the idiots on the ramp.

Re: Who is on this board?

45 years old been boating for 44, made my living on the water for 23 years, see nothing wrong with speed as long as its mixed with a stiff dose of COMMON SENSE. Boats dont't have brakes, a concept some people dont' grasp. At least twice a season I here of someone hitting a dock or something else at speed, the solid object always wins.I have hit the water a few times at 40+ MPH in my wilder days, and it HURTS wouldn't want to try 75!There are by far more "good & safe " boaters out there than MORONS the morons just attract all the attention. Same simple rule you learned as a kid translates well to boating DO UNTO OTHERS......Safe Boating!!

Re: Who is on this board?

I have 2 boats,
A 19' bluewater cuddycab with a lightly worked 4.3 it goes 42-44mph at wot. Last year my wife fell in love with the glastron175sx. It also has a 4.3 and will run way to fast with only 2 people in it 58-60 on gps. We have put over 100 hours on the glastron with our 2 kids this year and we boat year round. We fish and camp from the bluewater and ski and play in the glastron.

My wife and I got married when we were 22 years old and dated all through high school. I have to say without a doubt these last 3 years owning a boat have brought us closer together than I thought possible. We work as a team on the water and try to look out for other boaters. We have towed in 3 other boaters and brought gas to two others in the timewe have been boating. I say it will come back on us when we need it.
Seeing our handicapped daughter bouncing around in the tube without a care in the world grinning from ear to ear and helping my 3 year old learn to fish are the kind of memmories every family should have.

As for the speed vs. fishing thing
I like both. As soon as the waranty runs out on the glastron I have a 4bbl webber and intake ready to go on the motor and a 25 pitch revolution 4 prop to go on the back.
I hope to see the other side of sixty five with it!
My fishing boat I could care less about speed as long as it gets me and my family to our fishing spots.

34 from Seattle. I really don't need the high speed but don't care if people have fast boats, as long as they are couterous and don't run over my lines when I am fishing. I have been boarded by the fish and game and the CG, but they only wanted to see my registration and to make sure we had all of our required PFDs and VDS.

Re: Who is on this board?

Great topic,

I am 38 and have been on the water forever. I grew up on a 23 foot carver cabin cruiser. My dad was heavy into the CG aux. He still teaches the advanced navigation course. Got into big sailboats in my early twenties and learned a respect for their craft. When 5mph separates a fast boat from a slow boat forces good equipment and good techniques.

I have been forever impressed with the thoughtfulness of all types of boaters in Wisconsin. Many of the go fast boats type boats obey speed limits, wear pfd's and participate in weekly poker runs and adhere to all the laws. That includes the noise laws as well. The drag boats have their weekly competitions and are attended by hundreds/thousands. Got a question, ask anyone they will give you their opinion openly.

This brings us to PWC. Wow what can I say. Dangerous, thoughtless, uneducated fools that create hovoc everywhere they go. I see 10 year old kids zipping through anchorages and hopping wakes in busy channels on boats capable of over 60mph. But I am sure they are as skilled as their parents say they are. I have to say that not all PWC operators are menaces, but take a walk to a ramp, look off a bridge, go to the beach and tell me who will be conducting themselves in a thoughtless and dangerous manner and guess who will be the posterboy for dangerous operation. BTW when was the last time you saw one PWC operator yelling at another for doing something irresponsible? They typically are urging them on to greater and greater foolishness.

I recently sold my 17foot larson with a 150 merc which could do 53 to 55 mph. It is surely capable of higher speeds but that was fast enough for me. I currently own a 25 foot Cruisers CC. She will make 45 on a good day with a light load. Plenty for me. I like to spend days at a time on her, sometimes with no destination in mind.

Speed and design don't kill or irritate, bad operators do.
