i have a jhonson 60 hp 1993 and i went to the dealer and got the thermostat and thermostat gasket, and changed them. i just cranked up the motor and let it idle during its warmup deal, didnt throttle it up any, and 3 minutes later the water is warm comming out of the tale tale, probly around 85-90 degrees! now i put my hand on the thermostat housing and it is HOT. like 2-2.5 seconds hot. before it starts to hurt. i put the new thermostat in exactly the way the old one came out, the old one had a ring around the part that seals. i suppose it was not closing all the way therefore making the motor run cool. all i can say is the idle and sound is alot smoother and has a better tone. how can i verify that the thermostat is working? the thermostat also had a yellow coating on the thermostat straight out of the wrapper. anyways i didnt attempt to clean it or anything, is that normal? im sure the heat cycling will bust it loose?

The only sure way is to use the "temperature sticks" that melt at different temperatures to see how hot your cylinder heads actually are. It does sound to me that it is an awfully fast heatup.

Is the thermostat stainless steel from Johnson dealer? Is tattle tale hose located on top of block port side? Did parts person tell you about new inproved waterpump kit with nipple for relocating tattle tale hose on block and different water pressure relief spring? And more.

Actually, there is a couple of other options other than melt sticks.

My first choice would be Radio shacks infra red thermomenter. Bout 35$
Point it at the block push the button and it tells you the temp on a digital readout.

Second choice is a VOM with a temperature probe, Menards of all places has one
for about 49$.

First choice is more accurate, second is more flexable (volt, amps, ohms, transistors
battery tester, etc)

Mike

hrmm thinking about it it probly was more like 5 minutes, but the thermostat was what was listed, the dealer handed it to me after i told them what motor and they looked it up on microfiche and they got the correct part? yeah a pyrometer is probly cheap. when the overheat alarm goes off, is that too late? i mean if i go boating in the morning? does the stream from the pisser indicate head temp in anyway?

yeah i moved the water outlet to the top of the block with a brass fitting when we reringed it, something about bubbles forming? trapped air. so it is at the top of the water jacket. and we plugged off the old hole down low. ok so what about these springs?

Hrrmmm wouldnt the output of the tail tale being cold at first, then increasing to the warmth of around 85 or more degrees indicate that the thermostat is opening? btw how hot is a boat motor supposed to run? my car runs at 195deg. the head isnt boiling hot yet so i suppose that is good. is 200 too hot? 170?

WOW WOW WOW hold on there greg.. SLOW down take a deep breath every thing is going to be alright (everyone but greg, this guy's going to blow himself up!!!!, pass the popcorn)

Ok, try bringing your motor to a higher speed, also don't turn the poor thing on at the lowest idle it should warm up first, if you keep it low it will never do that. feel the tell tale stream at neat WOT and notice how it is so much cooler :)

Good luck

Pass the popcorn :)

it should be only 150??? let the motor warm up befor bringing it down to low idle!! YIKES YIKES YIKES... this guys not joking!

try using the methanal as a coolant, hook a pump to it and use then hook that to some muffs :)

SLOOPY - thinning out the gene pool one person at a time ;)

bring it upto speed!!!!!!!!!!! COME ON!! it will not hurt if you are afraid, just get a trashcan andlower theutboard into it and fill it with wate! and run (nuetral) at, at least 3000 RPMS!!!!!!! DON'T TRUST ME, GREG (never trust a man who says trust me") I have bean through 30 times more cooling problems then you ever have, I have even got my hand stuck in a moving propellor, when I was seeing if my impellor was sucking !!!

Re: whoa! how hot is my motor supposed to get!

I AM NOT JOKING!!! try it, use the moffs if you want, but a trash can is better (any large pale would work, even a 55 gallon drum.....

at slow idle the impellor is spinning so slow... and it takes a while to heat the engine up so......... most of the time at slow idle the tell tale will be hot! but at speed its like that off lake water.. I am not joking!

Re: whoa! how hot is my motor supposed to get!

ok get this i found a big rubbermaid container and it fit over the prop and the intake ports for the water, filled it up and it just covered the intake. so i cranks it up and it wont suck water? on the muffs there is enough pressure to put water to the pump, well i ran it for around 20 seconds or so and the tell tale wouldnt spit water, but exhaust was comming out? it has air pressure pushing out of the tell tale. anyway i suppose the lower unit wasnt deep enough and didnt have enough water pressure to force water to the pump. i just hope i didnt hurt my impellor :(
