so snoopy do you think my impellor wasnt being lubed from lack of water pressure? how long does it take to break down the impellor (read destroy) without proper lubercation from the water?

If you can hold your hand on the head for 2 or 3 seconds, the motor is at the correct temp, betwen 125 and 145 degrees or so. Don't worry about the yellow coating.

Hey Greg, if your cooling system is working correctly you should be able to hold your hand on the block without burning yourself ! I have found that both muffs and starting in a trash can do not give a good indication of water pump/cooling system efficency. If you have a lake close to you, take the boat there and start the outboard, trimmed to its usual running position. See what results you get under those conditions. Your Rubbermaid container was not deep enough. Although I have no idea of the water temp that comes from the telltale on my outboard, its only ever warm. I can always hold my hand under it. Its warmer at idle than what it is a WOT. If I've read my manual correctly my Suzuki runs at 144 deg. I'm afraid I have to disagree with Sloopy about taking your outboard up to 3000rpm without load in a trash can though !

Cheers, just my 2 cents worth :)
Mike

hi greg I might as well put my oar in (cos it seems to me more efficient than your outboard, just kidding) Kiwi didnt see that for all the popcorn he consumes dear snoopy isn't totally mad, he didn't suggest running the outboard at 3000 revs without load, he did specify to do it in neutral, that way you can still catch the 44gallon drum as it takes off up the drive. Any way all that aside if you are really worried about the working order of your new thermostat, take it out, test it in the kitchen, run it under the cold tap, then drop it into a glass of boiling water, you should hear and/or see it click, if it does its working!

What load is put on an outboard when its in neutral ? I just wouldnt do it - revving an outboard at 3000rpm in a trash can without load (ie neutral) I dont think is a good idea.

However, Kiwiboy's idea of testing the thermostat in the kitchen is a good idea ;) Although the method I use is to drop the thermostat into a pot on the stove - start with the water cold. Have a thermometer in the water, and when you see the thermostat start to open note the temperature on the thermometer and compare that with the thermostats temp range.

aarrggh thermostat/thermometer - I think I got em all the right way round !

Mike

bang on KIWI, i just read the fist part of my own post again and cant figure out what the **** Im talking about (ie load or no load) I'll chalk that one doown to trying to think and type at the same time. I guess I assumed you were implying that the motor should be run with load(ie in forwards or reverse) instead of sloopys suggestion of in neutral. So forget all that I take it back. In saying that I have run a smaller 20hp up to 3000revs in neutral, but even in neutral the prop throws a lot of water around. If you try it reinforce the edge of A large 44gallon drum (not a rubbish bin) by bolting a block of wood onto it and fill it right up with water

3000 rpm in nuetral is not going to hurt, it is going to get the motor hot enoght that you can see the stuff work!! No **** it is not under load! but it is getting hot hot hot!!! (like popcorn :) ) if you hear a POPING sound (Like POPCORN!) that was your piston rod going through the piston, I don't think that will happen :) and why do you stay up all night? you got to get it t 3000 rpms for a minute with water at the imepellor to see the differance :) saying that you got exust coming out that means the motor was pumping a little, so you impello is a little ok :)

Pass the Popcorn :)
