Who's right

I'm going to be replacing my canvas on my 26' Rinker this spring and would like to go with black but my wife is concerned about the extra heat from the black. I'm thinking if it's that big of a deal how come they sell so many black canvas setups. I always run with my bimini up and side curtains on but I'll have the u-shaped zipper windows that will be rolled up for plenty of ventilation. Any input would be appreciated. Please help us solve this debate.

Agreed. No need to ask who's right in a disagreement between a husband and wife!

I have black canvas on my little 17 footer. I had beige before - no difference.
If you have even one curtain out or rolled up, heat will not stay under an open canopy. If you do have all the curtains in, it's probably a day where you would appreciate the extra warmth.

Re: Who's right

Color is a complete preference.

Anybody that thinks that Black doesn't hold more heat that White missed high school Physics.

I live in a hot climate, the difference between white and black can be as much as 30*F in a car 150* to 180*) . I know the same is true on a boat.

My cars are white, my boat top is white.

I won't ride in my sons boat on a 115* day with a dark red top. It's an OVEN. My white top boat is MUCH cooler.

Leave the living room to your Love and outfit the boat for comfort-color "coordinated" of course!

White and light grey go with anything.

Ain't that a fact!

Far as canvas goes I sell an awful lot of black Sunbrella, and my shop's in SWFL. So if it tranfers that much more heat I reckon folks haven't noticed yet. It also happens to be one of their longest lasting colors. I've repaired/restitched stuff that was 12-13 yrs old.

You'd think, heat-wise, it'd be just the opposite but black zippers last twice as long as white ones?

Welcome Aboard Jeff.

Admirals can always pull rank over Captains. So, you choose carefully. You can be right, or you can be happy ;)

Fleetwin is right about the colors that generate heat. But it makes a difference where you are. In a warmer climate (on the Gulf, for example) color will matter more than up north (say, boating on Lake Superior).

Where do you want to sleep?

However: The top is above you and not usually enclosed. Breezes get under it. It will NOT radiate downward to bake your head. If you touch it, it may be hotter than a light color but heat rises. Any heat that does radiate downward will dissipate out the sides well before you notice it--that is, unless you are becalmed in the Sargasso Sea.

BUT AGAIN:

Where do you want to sleep?

Personally: All my tops are white or natural canvas. I just don't like the look of the dark colors

I seem to recall a useful saying about the control of a certain body part and whomever controls that part.

The color of a canvas top top on a mostly open boat will not have a big effect, maybe a couple degrees at the most. If your wife thinks it makes a difference it will and she'll let you know it. Choose your battles wisely. I've got a white Bimini here in Georgia where its plenty hot in the summer.

Re: Who's right

I can tell you first hand that the new black sunbrella canvas I put on my carver was no hotter and maybe cooler than the old burgundy on my wellcraft. I can also say that on the carver I had a temporary bimini sewn from a king size white bed sheet.... the black sunbrella blocked more heat than the thin white bed sheet.... I currently have a fellow making a black mooring cover for the wellcraft and I will be putting a sensor for a digital thermometer in the boat this summer to record temps.... under closed canvas vs under white gelcoat in the cabin.... I don't anticipate much of a difference.

Re: Who's right

I would say that the Admiral can choose My canvas If I can choose Her grinder ..

A happy wife is one that does not have to grind fiberglass and resin all day long for 2 weeks. ( Or in my case every day of the week lol :D ).

Im thinking you have the better deck at this point.

YD.

PS. Unless she is buying both the canvas and the grinder .. then your screwed into white ;) ..

Good lord, man, are you a newlywed? Of course she's right! Don't even think otherwise! Your only hope is to convince her that the black bimini is slimming...

Try this: Tell her how much easier it'll be to clean the black canvas vs the white ...?

Location? That black will be dust colored quickly in a sunny climate. Any other color will be dust colored in a sunny climate. Her color will keep you aboard. ;)

Huh!??? Are you implying his wife is Extremely Blonde?

Owning Black Canvas is like owning a Black Car.
It will show every little spec of dirt.

Unless of course, in you area, Bird Droppings are Black!

Re: Who's right

If you wanted black you should have just ordered it without discussing it first.

Its easier to get forgiveness than permission:cool:
