Re: Who's right

My 39 ft Sea Ray express has white sunbrella. It let in all the light without the heat of black. Good friend has a 34 Ft Sea Ray express with black sunbrella. His boat is much darker and is hotter under same conditions. Only drawback to my white is I have to remove it mid season, bring it home and run it through the washer (we have a big washer) with mild laundry soap and some bleach. Put it back on the boat to dry and waterproof with Starbrite waterproofing using my garden sprayer. I'll take the white.

yep on my previous boat i had dark blue sunbrella, and went to white the difference was amazing the white was dramatically cooler,

only downside is that it showed the dirt easier

Not that this has anything to do with the discussion ... but. Lighter colors don't last as long, show more dirt, and don't last as long ...

Far as bird poop goes I have a customer in Almeda Ilses that theorised, up until recently, he could prevent it by having canvas "the same color as the sky". So we made his top'n bow cover'n cockpit cover outa 'Mineral Blue' Sunbrella. (Closest I could come to the sky?)

Guess what. The birds didn't seem to care less. And now all his buddies are makin fun of him ...

Re: Who's right

How about a compromise and get a shade of grey. I bought a charcoal bimini from here the beginning of the season, should have gotten one for my previous boats. Best investment ever for a boat. The color matches my graphics, as grey pretty much matches anything. It also doesn't show dirt as well as other colors especially since it is a textured color. I don't notice the temperature but I was concerned before I bought it. The air circulates under it so can't imagine it makes any difference.

Re: Who's right

I read a few of the first posts and then stopped and scrolled down to the "reply" link.

The only difference the color of the cover will make is in how quickly the interior heats up. The final temperature, after everything has equalized, will be just about the same. The BTU transfer will occur until equilibrium has occurred - until the interior has enough heat to equalize that input from the sun. And the sun will continue to hit the cover with the same heat content regardless of the color of the cover.

Again, the cover will only affect how much time the whole process takes.

My bimini is black on the sides and red in the centre. If you hold your hand 1" away on the shaded side you can feel an immense difference moving from the red to the black and back. With black the process of roasting the interior takes little time.
