Classic example of the cat chasing it's tail!! The Gatorade is really trying to get you to drink more water. The stuff was developed down here at the University of Florida. There is a very high sodium (salt) content that when ingested makes you want to drink water.
Seems that here in the heat they were having a problem with the athletes not re hydrating. After drinking enough of the stuff you should have the desire to want or need water.
The stuff really doesn't quench your thirst.
So, it seems as if it's working as should be. ;)

Everything that you have said is a huge flag that you are either pre-diabetic, or have developed Type II diabetes. First, lay off the Gatoraide, and any other sweetened drinks, immediately. All of it is full of stuff that is not good for you. Gatoraide is ok if you are an athlete with normal blood sugar, but it wasn't designed to be an everyday soft drink.

Thirst is your body's way of telling you that you have too much glucose in your blood stream. Watch also for tingling in your fingertips and/or toes, and changes in vision. You may also feel fatigued.

Make an appointment with your doc as soon as poosible and get this checked out. He/she may want to do a fasting blood glucose test.

Don't fool around with this because, if you catch it early enough, you may avoid taking a lot of medications and/or insulin. If you are developing diabetes or have it, and you don't get it under control, you can look forward to things like heart desease, loss of vision, feeling like garbage all of the time, etc.

On the other hand, if you change your diet and maintain a good exercise program, you may avoid all of the above.

Watch it with drinking too much Gatoraide.

My friend used to do the same thing (drinking 4-5 quarts while at work) and then wound up passing a kidney stone  His doctor said it was due to all the excess minerals in the power drinks.

Well stated.

Diabetes can be hereditory but not always. Diabetes, in older folks, is almost always diet related. I just beat it. I changed my diet and lifestyle-GONE.

Get RID OF THAT GATORADE. It's sugar water.

I've always had a thirst. My mother thought I was diabetic, when I was a kid. Some people are just made that way. I drink nothing but water and unsweetened iced tea. Lot's of the prior.

As mentioned, I was pre-diabetic, a few years ago. I was also on blood pressure med's. I've beaten all of that. Diet and excersize are the key.

Don't mess with this. KICK IT NOW.

9 times out of 10, your BS is high.
BTDT with the wife this past year.
She was always active and then got to feeling tired all the time, took her to the doc and they checked her and she was at 519 on the BS count.
They put her on some insulin pills and we have changed our eating style and she is now down in the low 100s and feeling fine.
Still have to watch what she eats and drinks but we have it under control as best as possible.
Get checked. Being thirsty all the time is not normal.

Don't let the fact that your are only 19 lull you into a false sense of security. Type II Diabetes used to be thought of as a desease that becomes apparent in the late 30s to 40s. Not so any more, and it is now found in people in their early teens on occassion.

The main culprit is what we call food these days, and sedintary lifestyles. Gatorade is a case in point on the food side. It was originally developed for athletes at the University of Florida. Its intent was to rehydrate them and provide energy during intense competition. Its original ingrediants included sucrose syrup and glucose/fructose syrups, along with a couple of forms of sodium. It was never intended to become an everyday soft drink - which is exactly what it has become.

The good news is that, at 19, you are probably only pre-diabetic, if this is indeed what is going on. At your age, you should have no problem adjusting your food intake and engaging in an appropriate exercise program. Think of it this way - you may have just received a "wake-up call" at an age where you can actually do something about the problem with minimal effort.

Again-well stated.

Get off of the Gatorade, Red Bull or whatever you're drinking. Water is the best medicine.

I missed the fact that you are 19. This is a sign. Get off of that junk and get yourself healthy.

In addition avoid: white bread (hamburgers) and white pasta. White breads and pastas have very little nutritional value and are basically-SUGAR. Even though they are "Wheat" based, they only use the part that digests as sugar.

Good advise as far as the Gatorade type drinks...............as for the white bread and pasta type foods.....................if you are diabetic and only a Dr. evaluating blood test can verify that. What DJ is referring to are complex carbohydrates......Here's a little info on what I believe DJ was referring to:

Complex carbohydrates are found in fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds and grains. Some examples of foods high in starchy complex carbohydrates include bread, cereal, rice, pasta, potatoes, dry beans, carrots and corn. Green vegetables like green beans, broccoli and spinach contain less starch and more fiber. All grains include starchy carbohydrates. However, whole grains -- such as whole wheat pasta -- are better for you because they also have more fiber.

Again a simple blood test will indicate weather or not your blood sugar is normal...................................again a trip to the Doc is in order.

Re: Why am i always thirsty.

Good point by LT on the "if" part. There are other things that could be causing your thirst, and your doc is the one to advise you on that.

I brought up the things that I did because of the trends in regard to diabetes over the past 10 years or so. The fact of the matter is that diabetes is becoming "the heart desease" of this new era. That is a particularly frightening truth because it actually causes heart desease also, so its not a case of one desease replacing another. Another reality is that many people are diabetics for years without knowing it, so its important for others to make them aware of one of the things that could be causing certain symptoms.

Re: Why am i always thirsty.

Zach, I've been thristy lately, too. and I really don't drink sugary drinks to begin with. I think it's just this time of year... it's not so hot that we don't work outside at all, but hot enough to dehydrate us fast when we do.

I have to say though, as far as drinks go, the one that does hydrate me pretty well (better than gatorade or any of those sweat drinks)... is V8 splash (berry flavor). I'm not sure if there's some particular vitamin or mineral in it that helps to hydrate, but it really does hydrate me better than water, even.

Re: Why am i always thirsty.

Very good point SgtMaj,

I normally drink a few cups of coffee and a few glasses of waters each day. But, if I'm working outside I can easily burn through 2 gallons a day, just did it 3 days in a row while working on my boat,,, it was 100+ degrees outside

As others have said, see your MD. Drinking and not whizzing.? Problem.
Drinking and whizzing frequently? Problem.
I'm a recently diagnosed diabetic and as a Pharmacist I should have known the symptoms. I did, but I ignored them. Now on Insulin. Get yourself checked by professionals.
