Re: Why are anglers in Bass Boats so Inconsiderate of other boater?

I nearly had a run in with a tournament fisherman a couple of weeks ago.

I was visiting my parents (surprise) visit at their lake home and I decided to install some landscape lights on their dock.

It was about 11:00 AM and I was standing within the first ten feet of their 75 foot dock when a bass fisherman appeared. He worked the entire dock, bouncing the lures off of both the pontoon and the Whaler. He got within five feet of me and I told him I didn't appreciate him using the boats as backboards. He told me to go (*&^% myself and that I didn't own the water. I advised him that we do OWN the boats.

As he motored away (electric) I repeated his hull numbers back to him and he had better hope he didn't damage anything.

Djohns19, I would not call that a nearly.

I have never participated in any fishing tournament (sheltered life?) in my life but there must be something regarding rules of conduct for its participants.

I have to beleive that this would be the one ignorant idiot or the self appointed savior of the idiots who finds it necessary to give the rest of the fisherman a bad name. Do these tournament people not self regulate these matters?
Do other forum people have a comment about these rules or regs?

If not satisfied, perhaps I could suggest a skeet shooting contest to be held at your parent's dock for the next fish in! You could give bonus points .......well maybe I had better not finnish that thought.

Requiring a license to operate a boat would be a dandy idea. However, I am in Law Enforcment and you would be suprised at how fast some people forget the rules of the road. And as we know we are required to test for a driver's license. Every one is in such a hurry anymore, that consideration for others sometimes goes right out the window. we all need to slow down and enjoy life a little more. And fishing in solitude is the best fishing there is.

trooper251

Re: Why are anglers in Bass Boats so Inconsiderate of other boater?

Most of the time I just read the post and don't log in, but when I saw this one I couldn't help myself and had to reply. I,m a Bass fisherman with a Bass boat. I fish for fun and tournaments. I am very considerate on the water and everyone I know who fish from Bass boats are the same. Tournament rules are very strict and consideration for others are at the top of the list. I'm sure their are some real dummies out there, but the biggest part of them are the sport boats. Perhaps you should look to what part of the country your in. Most people from the north are a little more impatient than us slow folks from the south. Nothing personal, just something to think about. Thanks for the chance to reply.

I've seen the idea of boating licences in a couple replies here and I agree with it fully. Oregon already has those and I wish Texas (and other states) did too. It would only help make the boating more enjoyable.

Imagine the same rules on the water as we have on the road:
- you drink and drive, you lose your licence
- you drive without a licence, you are fined and banned from the lake and won't get a licence for 2 years
- you get too many speeding tickets, you lose your licence
etc

I am originally from Europe and in my country you gotta have a licence to operate a boat (I believe this only applies to powerboats). This prevents jerks and show-offs from buying a powerboat/PWC and ruining the boating experience for others.

Have a great boating weekend!
Lou

I ususally just listen to this board, but I feel compelled to respond to this one. There are so many examples of rudeness on the water. I think there is pretty much an equal opportunity of rude behavior from the ignoramuses who don't know simple boating rules.

So many times I've had to cut power for some dope wanting to get to point B instead of yielding the right of way. And then there was the time I had to drop and protect a skier with my boat because both driver and watcher in another boat were watching their buddy ski. I could go on and on and on...

For the life of me I cannot understand how anyone can be in a sour mood while on the water.

Back to the original subject, my theory is this:
little johnson equals big flashy boat/car/plane/etc and the need to show it off. Most show offs are also rude. Case closed.
If they get real close, just yell out "Mine is this big", use both hands to frame the appropriate size, and flash a big grin. Runs em off everytime.

Unlike boating, its a no rules game....just like the old joke about two old boys on a RR trestle bridge. they stop to whiz, second later one says...water's cold...few seconds later other sez....deep too.

Boating is like"Andy Of Mayberry"your always going to have a Gomer on the water, and we have to be on our toes.I'm not in law enforcement but the same thing happens on the road,You have the person doing hole shots at the light,or passing you in a 30mph zone doing 90,etc.In Indiana you must be a lic. driver to operate a boat and to a few,its do as you wish and ignor the rest, and the rules

mth-54 Pink at night sailors delight,Pink in the morning sailors take warning! ;)

Re: Why are anglers in Bass Boats so Inconsiderate of other boater?

I've fished a few tournaments with a buddy of mine who's owned a number of bass boats. My experience has been that a lot of these guys (bass & or walleye tournament folks) are definitely competetive and some are classic type "A" personality, however, these guys do take boating safety very seriously. Any sanctioned tournament REQUIRES a full safety equipment inspection prior to launching, and you'll never see a team without their life jackets on when the outboard is running.

As previously mentioned...most bass boats do "power on" to their trailers....just as countless other boats do as well. When loading, my buddy trims his outboard up so the prop wash is surfacing...not scouring out the river bottom.

All and all...my experience with bass boats & those who drive them have been positive. I can't say the same about the generation "X" folks I've come across driving $40,000 tournament water ski/wakeboard boats. These things put out a wake that rivals any tsunami. One almost swamped my 14 foot Klamath last week...

Idiots are idiots...regardless of what boat they pilot.

My 2 cents worth...

Walt

Re: Why are anglers in Bass Boats so Inconsiderate of other boater?

I thought I put in 2 cnets on this thread way back, but I couldn't find it.

Oh well, I am a Bass Fisherman ( I fish for catfish, bream, salt water fish also). I also drive my boat up on the trailer. My rig was designed to do so.

As some one mentioned above Please do NOT lump us all together. I owned a 12 foot jon boat with a 9.9 on it while I was growing up so I know what it feels like to take a wake.

I slow down whenever possible for other boat that are fishing. Unless they are in open water and my wake is no greater then the current wave activity on the lake.

Back in Feb I was fishing a river for the local White Bass run when 3 (@#$%) gentle men came roaring through in thier Boston Whaler. I told them the fishing was great til they showed up! You should have seen the look on their faces. They just didn't get it! Sure wanted to kick their butts, but 2 wrongs don't make a right.

The waves didn't bother my boat, but it bothered others around me.

too me it seems a little pointless to go that fast, nothing wrong with having a lot of power on a boat, but I only care about moving along nice enough to get some wind in my hair, that, at least to me translates to about 20 MPH, you know the speed where you can't tell how bad you are actually getting sunburned. wind=good, bugs/birds in my teeth=bad, what can I say my boa

Re: Why are anglers in Bass Boats so Inconsiderate of other boater?

In reply to the boating license.......Utah now has a law also that requires all motorists on the water ,in any motor driven vessel, to pass an endorsement for water safety. There are also provisions in the working for certain bodies of water here to hold a CPR certification also in order to operate a vessel for any reason. Most people don't even know that there is such a law here as I have found out talking with a few boaters on Utah Lake the past week. I recommend that all of you look up your state's boating laws as of right now and get familiar with them, before you find out you've been doing something wrong that you didn't even know about.

Re: Why are anglers in Bass Boats so Inconsiderate of other boater?

(especially to Sandy)... I'm from the SOUTH too. Alabama is as far south as you can go... below that you get to Florida which is full of Yankees & other foreigners who left their origins to escape the heat :p In Alabama we've had vessel license quite a while. NOW OMIGOD you MUST BE 14 to get a boating license.. Imagine that. 14 YEARS OLD at 70 mph on the water with 150+ horsepower hangin between your legs... and an old fart like me can't even sip a cool beer on the water legally while tooling around in a flat bottom boat at 5 mph with a 6 hp motor on it. Is this twisted logic or what??? I could be stoned and toasted and not be near as dangerous as a 14 y.o. on a water scooter doing 60+ mph. Then.... on Smith Lake it is the clearest water in the USA adn a mile wide in front of our place.. I had to wait several minutes while all the A$$holes in the bass club passed by at a zillion mph (in the middle of the week!!!) before I could begin to cross the lake on my PWC... the 4th one I purchased for me and the kids this summer... but we play safe and my kids are 24 years old and these old "cheap" scooters can't get over 40 mph which is plenty fast enough on any water in Alabama for any reason (unless you're trying to outrun the law or your girlfriends husband).

ok, my 2 cents, its not that we need more rules (laws and licences)but enforcement of the ones that allready exist. our sheriffs department is in charge of enforcement of these . we have 3 good sized lakes and 2 rivers for them to patrol.
the tax payers have provided them with 2 nice river sleds and 6 pwc for that purpose. the only time in the last 6 years that i have seen all this equipment is when it was on display at the local fair or in a parade some where (one of the sleds didnt even have current tags on it)requiring someone to pass a class as Oregon has done is not going to change a persons atitude but maybe if that person has to reach into his wallet a time or two to pay for his stupidity he just might learn somthing.

Seems like anytime someone has a problem with
someone else, they look to the government for
more regulation in order to stop the problem.
While a boating safty course is not a bad idea
for a new boater, it will not stop people from
being rude or stupid. Passing a written test
will not prove that someone can or will properly handle a boat or make them respect other boaters.
Be carefull what you wish for people, the same people
you see out there now will still be out there
if permits are required. We will just have higher
taxes, more regulation and another excuse for government to boss you around and take away your freedom.
