Why can't I get my lower unit off?

I have a 60's model 3.9hp merc. I loosened both bolts that hold the lower unit in place and put the engine in F. However, the lower unit doesn't come off easily. Any recommendations/advice? Should I use some gentle persuasion in the form of a mallet?

It sounds like it's stuck on the driveshaft, with a block of wood for a dampener tap down on the cavitation plate.

Laddies is a real pro. Been around helping people on this forum for a long time.
The only thing I can add, is to go "easy" Try to tap it where it's thicker metal. It's is very easy to crack the outer edges. I've done it!

Could have corrosion in it too. I had a 1973 Merc 9.8HP my grandfather had. It was perfect when it went into storage for years, in a house that was flooded 3-4 feet deep during a hurricane 4 years ago. Salt water got into it and no one thought to do a routine flush after that storm, so it was 4 years later when I got it and found out how corroded it was from that.
