Easy now. I am sure you believe its been 43 years. I find that to not even be possible.
But what do I know.
Are you sure someone has not been changing that impeller when you are away on vactions or somthing??

Salty dog here..........
If someone had loaned me a boat/engine and bragged about not changing the water pump impeller for years, I would have thrown one in and kept my mouth shut, just for my own insurance.

Also, most shops consider water pump service part of a spring tune-up.

Jigmister this boat is kept at our cabin which for the last 25 years only gets used a few weeks out of the year (I am sure this adds to the longevity of the impeller some) as we moved to Texas and don't get up to MN as often, before that we used it most weekends all summer long. In other words it is only when we are on vacation it gets used :)..

Salty dog, I don't think I was trying to brag, I just saw a lot of posts in the archives about changing the impeller every year or at least every few years that that seems to be excessive to me so I thought I would post our experience and get others opinions on how often to change it. My dad has always done the yearly maitenance which for us has only included changing the lower unit lube and fogging the cylinders every fall (seems to be working well so far (ok maybe I am bragging now :)..

I am still wondering if anyone has any thoughts on when the impeller should be changed other then the two possibilities we have already discussed here (yearly and 43 years :)..

Are you saying the engine hasn't seen a fresh spark plug, or needed troubleshooting in 43 years.

I still think you're pulling my leg.

Sparks plugs yes they have been changed a few times. One time about 15 years ago it wouldn't idle so my dad called a mobile mechanic that did dock service. He did some type of adjustment (think he said he advanced the timing?) but within a few days it started racing at idle and he had to change that back (haven't had trouble since). Thats pretty much it yes. Again I was pretty young for the first 10 years of ownership so I can't personaly vouch for that time. Just cause now I am courious I will have dad bring me the file on it and see (he keeps all receipts).

Have fun.

I think you have answered your own question. Run the thing till it over heats then change the impeller and hope its not ruined in the name of 25 bucks.
after 40 plus years its time to retire the old girl anyways.

otherwise change the impeller as recommended. every other year.
