Why doesn't my Tach work?

Re: Why doesn't my Tach work?

I hooked the Gray sender wire (which incidentally is bundled with a tan wire) to the top yellow terminal. Started it, the tach jumped to 1000 rpm then back to 0 where it stayed while it idled.
What does that mean?

I'm starting to wonder about the Stator. How do I troubleshoot that? *Please see message right above this one*

Re: Why doesn't my Tach work?

Sorry, been a bit 'off'.
With running engine, measure voltage between the yellows - you should have AC voltage.
Measure voltage between one yellow at the time and ground - you should have 0 voltage.
With not running engine:
Measure resistance (Ohm) between the two yellow - you should have resistance.
Measure resistance between yellow and ground - you should have open circuit (no resistance reading)
If any of the above fails, you have a defective stator.
Hope I got it right this time??:)

Re: Why doesn't my Tach work?

No problem...
I did some testing today, but really I don't know where I'm supposed to put my Red & Black leads from my ohm meter. I'm just touching them to yellows, I'm touching them to grays black, IDK. Do I start the motor, grab my meter and put it on ACV, touch the red end to a yellow wire, and the black end to engine ground? and look for an AC reading? if so, am I looking for 25v as stated above. Thank you for bearing with me. It's my first boat, and not being a mechanic, you wouldn't believe what I've already replaced inside that Cowling. Give me a guitar and I'm a wizard...This boat makes me feel like an idiot!

Ever tested an old type microphone or speaker?
Same system!!
Wires coiled around an iron core!
Pulse the current into it and the magnet on the membrane reacts and if lucky with your pulses, you get music!!
We (You) just need to see if the pulses are there.
The RED lead on your multimeter is normally +, the black -.
Red and Black one on each of the yellow - read Ohm when engine not running, read Volts AC when engine is running.
Red on any wire - black to engine block (ground), Ohm should be 'open' (eternal) - no contact with engine not running, and no voltage with engine running.

I'm standing out here with the meter :)

I put the red on the top yellow, black on yellow under it. reads 1.2 with meter set on ohms...

The "Gray" wire bundled with a "Tan" wire? I assume you're speaking of the wiring at the terminal wiring strip of the engine.

I don't recall that model's gray wire being bundled with anything. However, if you're sure that you had the proper wire, did you try attaching it to the other yellow lead?

Re: Why doesn't my Tach work?

Yes I tried hooking the gray wire to the yellow in to#1 of the wiring block & #2. Only #1 made the needle on the tach jump when I started it. That tan wire is bundled. I continuity checked and that gray wire is going to the tach. It only jumped up to 1000 for a split second then back to 0 when it started to idle.

Great, your stator might be ok!
Next would be, unless you have retired from the project, to give a pick of your 'bundled' wires??
Load in on photobucket and give us the link, or straight to this site.
But be aware, I guess you are up for a regulator change which will mean removal of flywheel!! Need a puller.

Difficult to get it with the cover on the connection strip, but seems to be some 'unknown' cables attached.
