Re: Why don't some people cover their boats?

My boat doesnt get covered much in the summer. Through the winter it resides in a tarp building that we made from two trampoline halves :D one thing I will never do is cover it up tight. Thats worse then letting it sit out! It will be full of mold and rot, there is always going to be some water in there. Sealing it off with a cover only cuts it off from the neccessary amount of breeze. I keep telling myself that boats cannot be hurt by water, especially when im out in 8 footers getting soaked wondering whats the difference? as long as your bow is up and plug is out (dont forget to put him back in) ;)
Craig

Yeah,Yeah,Yeah. Here in Va. it goes both ways. I bet most of the floor rot came from beneath and not from above. The problem is that the water condensates then it forms a film on the underside
and then you add darkness you get algea / rot. Your tansom is probly rotted due to the sealing of fastenners and motor mounts not to talk about the transom mounted transducers that aren't sealed. Also don't forget what causes gel coat blistering is the water in the bilge migrating through the fiberglass where it is blocked by gelcoat and creates pockets. So my answer is no I don't cover during the summer monthe because I don't want two shades of gel coat but I do park in a pole shed durring the three months of winter lay up. (Mainly because I think melting and refreezing snow will trap the moisture and cause major gel coat issues. Ps. I rarely wash my car either oops.

i had a nice RED Cris Craft stinger, north Fl filled up the gas tank, jacked up the front, pulled the plug, and covered her up for the winter. spring came uncovered the boat and gas has leaked from the vent under the cover and messed up the side stripes, gelcoat, and some of the interior. i wont cover a boat up tight again, but i do belive in keeping them under a carport or something.

good quality covers will let it breathe and not
cause condensation/moisture probelems. it will
also give years of extra life to interior and
gelcoat by blocking UV damage.
always have/will cover my boats.
my .02,
M.Y.
