Yes there are 10 speeds.I drive mostly 15 speeds and on these you have a splitter some call them and a high and low range also. When you get in the high range you can then split each individual gear to actually make one hole have two gears by way of a little splitter switch on the gear shifter..I have never driven any of the 18 speeds but the more gears the better...

When we buy a new work truck for work we have to speacial order with manual tranny they say that the new auto trannys are getting smarter for towing heavy stuff .we have a couple of new fords with the auto trannys and they just dont hold up or have the same power as the manuals. We got a 2008 that has already had the tranny rebuilt... Of corse thats a Ford for yeah.

It's only a matter of time before automatic, or semi-automatic transmissons, become commonplace in the big-truck world. Macho men (and women) will just have to get used to it.

They have been around for years, so the reliability is there. They are being engineered for better fuel economy, and are deemed much safer to drive, verses a manual trans, especially for less-experienced drivers. Old truckers that have had artificial knee replacements appreciate them, just so they can keep their jobs.

FWIW, the military (USAF at least ) began to switch over 100% of all ground based vehicles, to automatic transmissions, over 20 years ago. Automatics were considered safer to drive.
