Re: Why I'm a conservative

PW2,
That was one of the best post I've read on this board. Thanks.
I'll relate a popular quote from the Bible that conservative like to use, but don't practice in real live. "Give a man a fish, he eats for a day. Teach a man to fish he eats for a lifetime".
I think your Daughter was taught to fish.

PW2,

Fiscal conservative and social liberal do not fit together. The US is fighting a war for "freedom", the most precious commodity that any human could ask for. Without freedom, we are all pawns in a very dangerous chess game. I'll pay the bill, for freedom, any day.

My blessings and prayers to your daughter. You know I mean that.

When is enough enough? When someone (government) "confiscates" 50% of my income by some ridiculous tax law (Pres. Clinton), one can be expected to be mad.

Maybe I'm weird, but I am a GIVER-big time. I think private organizations can do allot more and more efficiently than ANY government. Government waste is legendary, at least here in the US. I can only imagine what Canadian waste is in a socialist environment.

We DO NOT disagree that there are those, in our society, that need special help. I'll help. Just don't confiscate it from me and waste half of it.

Thanks, jimonica.

She has done most of the work, and I am proud of her.

But I have been helping her fight for herself since she had a brain tumor and became blind at age 5. I don't like to lose, and neither does she.

We have fought everyone at every step of the road of every political persuasion--Some well meaning, and some not so well meaning. I admit to making life miserable at times for the principal at the high school in Ontario when he would agree to do something and then not follow thru. (To this day when I run into him in the small Northern Ontario town, he will not acknowledge that he even knows who I am--trust me, he knows who I am).

And we have never ever asked for charity. (Scholarships yes, charity no)

It just seems we have been fighting an inordinate number of conservatives---but you are right, I taught her all I know.

The most important lesson she learned in those days was advocating for her rights, and, if I don't say so myself, she is pretty darned good at it.

And yes, DJ, there is waste everywhere, and I pay taxes too and I don't want them wasted either. Not everything is a waste.

Re: Why I'm a conservative

The thing I specifically don't like about self-described conservatives is that they seem to propose policies that if it doesn't specifically benefit them directly, they oppose it in favor of some sort of Darwinian free-for-all.
What hypocracy?
Because that statement was really out in left field somewhere. I tried to place it to the "self-described conservatives" I know including myself and it didn't fit anywhere, not even close.
However, the "Darwinian free-for-all" fits very nicely if you compare it to how the Hollywood liberals live their lives. And the "enlightend" attitude of a good number on the left.
As a matter of fact the more extreme the left, the more the "free-for-all" it gets.

Thanks for all the replys folks,
Hope I didn't mislead anyone, I'm not a recent "convert". I've been a voting conservative for at least 10 years now.

Thanks DJ, I try my best with my kids. I think one of the big problems with Americas kids today is the parents don't spend enough time with their kids. Just throw em in school to take care of the education and morals and babysitter after school so both parents can work. I know parents who take the kids to daycare on their days off from work! Amazing.

I don't do the homeschool thing, my wife is an english as a second language person, and wouldn't be able to educate the kids properly. I work, so I can't do it. But I would if I could!
