Why put request to one persom in subject line?

It had been a couple weeks since I was here and was checking up on what I missed and I noticed a large number of posts that the subject contained simply : "question for.....". Typically this is for Don. I have been a member here for a while and I freely admit Don is staple and a huge benefit for me and others but there are many knowledgeable useful folks here to help. It seems seems wrong to limit you request to just one guy. Please don't take this the wrong way , I don't mean to whine, heck maybe Don or whoever loves loves the personal attention. I just know that perhaps the people miss out on other valuable advice. :$

Don't blame the addressee. Don has asked in the past not to be singled out in a post.

Re: Why put request to one persom in subject line?

I think a lot of the time it happens with new members. They read threads with similar problems and answers. Don S. donates much of his time to answer so they see his name a lot. When they post, they include his name because they think he may miss it otherwise, or know the answer straightaway.

And yes, he has said many times that he does not like being singled out and reads all posts and only adds if he has something to add. But I think he understands why they do it...some people freak out when things break, some people understand if it runs, it breaks. Takes all kinds, you know...

I thought it was because the rest of us are idiots. I rarely post a reply not because I dont know the answer but because someone already posted what I would have or I`m less then 100% sure I have the right answer. I see alot of bogue answers from guys who throw stuff out there. So maybe this is why they only post to one name but I think they should PM them not put it on the board for all to see.

Posts to a certain person don't really bother me,they help me identify posts I want to read. And sometimes respond to.I know my replies are not always total answers,But I hope my replies give insight.

AND the best part, most replies enhance my knowledge.

Bogus replies are easy to weed out.

There may be a valid reason for doing so Mike. The powers that be would prefer it was done by PM however, certain folk in here never check their in-box. :%

Regardless, other members get upset when discussions go underground to PM's or Email. And yes, DonS has asked on several occasions not to address him personally.

Whatever method works. Don't you just hate reading a for sale ad that doesn't include the price? The thinking is, if the price is posted it will scare off potential buyers. In actuality, if the price is right it will sell the merchandise when presented to knowlegable people. On the other hand the more you reach the better the chance for culmination. Just a thought.

I post to DonS occasionally by name as one proffesional to another.
however I encourage anyone with the information to chime in. I have never looked in my PM box. not real sure how. I prefer everything in open forum so all can learn and if I make a mistake someone can correct it quickly.
if I was working on an old stringer unit I would most likly tag Bondo, however the odds are slim to none there :):).
I get called out occasionally on the Yamaha forum as does Ray and a few others.
doesnt bother me as long as its kept in the forum.
of late I dont get to spend much time at the keyboard.
in fact tonight I am posting, chatting with my Honey in caracas and packing box's for my impending move.
so its been a tad busy.

To all,

-Requesting one forum member is not encouraged. This is, after all, a message board. The messages are stored and are avialable for reference.

-iboats encourages "talking" on line. There are many "lookers" that will never post a message. They are welcome and can glean from the vast knowledge-already given and available.

All the regular helpers.

Thanks for your volunteeer help. You do not have to but you do.

Thanks again.

Re: Why put request to one persom in subject line?

When I see a post with a person name and no problem I assume they only want one persons opinion.

When I see a post like,

"Please help big problem"

I usually do not even read it. I do not read every post, just do not have that much time. I open one I think I may be able to help on or one I want to learn about.

Subject Should be more like

"OMC 1980 140 HP Stringer Outdrive will not tilt" OR

"Mercruser 2001 135HP Motor over heats at high RPMs"

It would save us all time if give basic information in the subject line. They can even be two lines.

Last one that drive me crazy when you open the post and see

"Do I have the right prop." With no other information or

" Motor won't run PLEASE HELP!!!!!" With no Information, What a waist of time.
