I was having a discussion with someone regarding the necessity of raising the propeller out of the water when not in use. What are the specific reasons for doing so? I'm using a minn kota electric motor being in a community fresh water lake.

When you say "not in use" do you mean at anchor while fishing or left in slip for days when the boat is not in use?

I don't know much about electric motors (plastic propeller maybe?), but I think the general concern for i/o when slipping is possible electrolysis (sp?) damage from leaving exposed metal in the water for long periods.
