Re: Why why why???

Yes Don I did purchase the engine, Why? becasue he didnt want to get involved in purchasing the engine, But he installed it, I paid him and trusted him as my mechanic that the motor was installed correctly, (the motor itself is fine).

Thanks for backing me up Chris. I am sorry to go an on about this but this mechanic knows all about the problems that I have had, as 12 months ago I paid him to re wire the whole boat, when I got the boat back the navigational light would come on very slowly. As time went on, it took longer and longer. I decided to check it out and there was an old corroded wire connected so the wife and I had to install a new navigational wire(strike one).

When the insurance company told me that the other motor had overheated and that they found that the Temp alarm was NEVER connected(STRIKE 2),becuase of this, the insurance company stronlgy advise that I did not go back to this mechanic. The insurance company advised me to take this guy to Dept of Fair trading, but no I thought I should give this guy a chance to correct himself, I thought I would be fair and give this guy and his staff another try.

I ordered the engine as he dosent like to get involved in purchasing engines,???? Once the engine was installed, The Mechanic told me it was quote "GOOD TO GO" I then got the boat back home and found that the trim gauge now wasnt working,I found out after some time that he did not connect the trim gauge sensor wires to the harness they were tape up out of the way(STRIKE 3). I dont know much about boats and thanks to your break down Don I figured it out and got it working.

So imagine me, I didnt take this guy to Dept of Fair Trading, I also didnt take it to another mechanic (beacuse he was worried that if I did take the boat elsewhere that the insurance company would feel bad of him) I then get the boat back after spending another $5500($3100 for the motor and $2400 for install). My wife been crying over the stress of us spending $17000 in 12months on a $14000 dollar boat and I told her when we get the engine in and we will be fine. So I take it out on the water with my wife to run it in and with in 5 mins it screams with the alarm, it also blows black smoke and boggs down,(Im not a mechanic, I have no idea whats happening) so we then have to get towed back to the boat ramp and I had to jump in the water and got soaked because we couldn't get close enough to the ramp. so imagine how my wife and I felt. We are just battlers trying to have something to enjoy with our kids!

Then I take it back to the mechanic and he tells me

1. The choke wire was left off the choke (STRIKE 4, YOU DONT GET THAT MANY STIKES IN BASEBALL)which caused the black smoke and bogging down

2. He finds out the alarm is in the incorrect spot (after the Thermostat) shouldnt be there(so he tells me) and so he going to put it in another spot(dont forget I know nothing about boats, so I am still not sure if this is correct)

3. Dont forget he didnt connect the trim wires to the harness.

He also said "dont worry the temp is fine and the oil pressure is fine"
What about my blood pressure, maybe I need an alarm on that!!!

And today I asked him whats taken so long to change the alarm around and he tells me that I should give him a break ,that he isnt getting paid for this???? Excuse me??? I thought I paid him good dollars 12 months ago to rewire this boat and he NEVER did it? and now it has caught up to him. Im sorry I thought a mechanic was suppose to make sure everything was fitted back to the way it should be when they install an engine!!! And dont forget I also paid him $2400 for installing the engine,I think he did get paid. Im sure that connecting the alarm back up was part of installing the engine, so was connecting the choke , so was connecting the Trim Sensor to the wire harness and to top it all of HE KNEW ALL THE HISTORY OF THE $17000 because $12000 of it was paid to him within twelve months.

Anyway he phoned me back later this afternoon and tells me that they have changed the location of the temp alarm and that they where happy with everything and that they will be taking the boat down for another run tomorrow. Tomorrows a new day!!!

Yes guys the manifolds and risers are fine, they are twelve months old

In closing, Im sorry, I think he deserves a spray, was I wrong???

I think I deserve a break!

Its mechanics like him that give you good mechanics a bad name

AHHH that felt good :)

$31,000 on a 15 year boat that is only worth at best $10K in the states; my wife would be a widow now because she would have done buried me by now. Yup 6 feet under!

Re: Why why why???

$2400 to install an engine is just plain insane! That's 24 hours at $100... I can have an engine out, strip the sump and timing cover off, install a new timing cover, have it all back together and back in the boat, running, with all the gauges and alarms working in less than 10 hours!!!

As for 'finding another spot for the over-temp sensor', that's also crazy! They all run the sensor in the same place (base of the thermostat housing), they is no 'alternative spot'!!!

I know, but what do you do when the motor is shot, without it, its not worth anything. I tell my self everyday that I could have purchased a new Boat for the money I have spent. This mechanic had no hesitations in rubbing it one day and saying to me that a customer of his imported a 2009 Bayliner from the states and after all cost it cost him $24,000. Thanks I needed that!

I only wish you where over here Chris, You would have my business in a heartbeat, I never question the quote and always pay straight away. I thought it was a bit much as well but who am I to judge I am just a customer, and now he is complainig he isn't getting paid to fix the alarm(or what ever is really wrong)???

Im not sure if this is bulls&*t Chris but he said he swaped the heater sensor with the heater alarm, he swaped their spots, I may be wrong but arn't they joined together, or least side by side?

I sell at my work infered guns I will buy one to make sure that it isnt getting hot, what would be normal operating temp?

Re:need help ???

Ok I just got the boat back but more problems he tells me.

The alternator is shot so they dissconnected the wires and have taped up the wires up because it was draining the battery and making the gauges go hey wire ??? He also said I am getting some popping at WOT because battery is getting low and staving the pertol Pump??

And then he said to contact my insurance company as it was part of the submerging claim when I left the bung out and that I should get the assecessor to contact him, and he said its going to be an expensive quote.

Because he wants to get his money back from playing with the sensors etc.

Guys does this sound correct? Should I connect the alternator back up? and if so what wires go where? I have an Orange one, Purple and one with red and purple.

this guys is confusion the hell out of me, what should I do?

That sounds plausible. Low battery voltage would make the pump less efficient.

I have to be truthful here. If I was the assessor I would knock the claim back. The claim for the submerge was finalized, and he or you signed off on it. If it is knocked back, take the alternator to any auto electrician and have it repaired. They are easy to do (I do them myself) and a new one from Merc is expensive. Once the alternator is repaired, have Mr Mechanic refit it. And tell him he's doing it for free because it should have been an automatic replacement on the submerge claim...

Boat goes down (engine gets fully wet) I replace Alternator, starter motor, all solenoids and relays and COMPLETE wiring harness, then I start on the engine internals.

Which he should have fixed 2 visits ago!!!
