Re: Why won't my boat sell?

stoked not,

Personally, I would not do it. You are leaving yourself wide open for potential problems. Also, I'm sure there are liability issues. Whenever I sell something that requires tags and registration, I keep my tags and turn them in to the NJ DMV and get a receipt indicating I surrendered the tags back to the state.

Here is a little story you may find interesting. My brother in-law sold his car and let the guy use the tags to take the car home. Well you guessed it, the guy never returned the tags and must have kept them on the car. He then proceeded to rack up hundreds of dollars in parking violations. Based on the tags a warrant was issued for my brother in-laws arrest for failure to appear in court. He lost a days work and a lot of hair to get the whole mess straightened out.

I would tell the buyer it's a problem he has to resolve. Preferably by registering the trailer before he drives off with it.

Good Luck

i agree with ratfish, lord forbid! what if the trailer came detached from the truck? i'm only guessing that you as the registered owner would be liable for any damages involved.
i have done it before, for somebody i knew well. but even at that it was a big risk. no way i would do that for someone i didnt know!

I would not do it!
The new owner can do two things:
1) you can sent him the title for the trailer and he/she can title it in his/her state. OR
2) he/she can get temp tags for transporting the trailer from the state you live in (MD?) he/she should be able to do that at any dmv in your state.(I think)

Fellows,
I spoke to VA DMV. You guys are right. DMV said that's its illegal to do this aand for 5.00 the buyer can get transport tags good for three days.

Congrats on your sell! About the plates, mine fell off in Annapolis once, and after talking with the local police he said to just write the registration number on a piece of cardboard, then put 'Lost Tag' above it.

Of course, the temp tag works much better!

OKAY Guy's I hope this my last post on the advise to sell my boat. I feel like I'm being a real pain in the butt.
The gentlemen I'm selling my boat too is coming from out of state. He be arriving on a Sunday when the banks are closed and he dosn't want to travel with cash. He want's to know if he can pay with traverlers checks. He's probally a honest fella but you never know. He could call the holder of the checks and say he lost the checks after he drives of with my boat and title. Should I only recieve cash? What about a money order?

Say NO to travelers checks and NO to borrowing your tag. I would only take cash or a cashiers check. If he can get cash he can get a cashiers check. Watch yourself. He might arrive on Sunday and try and talk you into something. He needs to have his stuff together BEFORE he gets to you.

Just my 2 cents.

stoked not,

I agree with NCOffSeason. With computers nowadays you can print some pretty convincing fake documents. I always tell people "cash only" but then again I never sold anything over $2500. I would consider holding the title until the check clears. You have to protect your interests. Maybe I'm just too cynical...

Cash only. Or, he can wire the money to your bank, today, before it closes. Or he can set up a paypal account and pay you.

From what I have been told, travelers checks are pretty much the same as checks. They can be stopped on the payment. This sounds really fishy. You said he made a deposit. What did he use to do that with? If he really wants the boat, he will provide the cash.
